Recruitment Of Human Rights Commissioners
The Human Rights Commission recently announced that the Human Rights Amendment Act 2012 came into operation on Friday, October 26, 2012. The Human Rights Act, 1981 was amended by providing, amongst other changes, for an independent Selection and Appointment Committee to recruit, interview and appoint Human Rights Commissioners.
The Selection and Appointment Committee will meet to review applications, interview candidates and make appointments to serve as Commissioners on the Human Rights Commission and ensure a diverse composition of Commissioners which is representative of the community.
The Selection and Appointment Committee invites applications from the general public for persons to serve as Human Rights Commissioners. Once applications are received the Committee will review all applications and appoint up to twelve Commissioners to serve for a three year term. The composition of the Commission requires that one-third of the Commissioners be members of the Bermuda Bar in good standing while two-thirds will be drawn from the general public.
The Commissioners of the Human Rights Commission serve as members of Human Rights Tribunals to adjudicate complaints made under the Act. Commissioners also serve as educators and advocates of human rights, inclusion and equality.
Interested persons can request an application from the Office of the Human Rights Commission. The Commission is committed to providing services which embrace diversity and which promote equality of opportunity. Pursuant to Schedule 1 of the Act, the
Commission offers reasonable assistance when requested to applicants with disabilities throughout the recruitment process. For more information about the selection and appointment process, or to request an application, kindly contact the office at 295-5859 or email humanrights@gov.bm.
The closing date for applications is Wednesday, December 19, 2012.

Hmmmm, Can the slection and appointment committee discriminate and not appoint a gay applicant because they are gay?
@ Blurt: The way the law stands now, they could. They’ve already appointed a ‘straight’ person in the past who was openly biased against gay people. Some Human Rights, eh! In any case, it doesn’t matter who gets appointed, they Commission has no teeth. They can recommend but only the Minister can decide which cases to pursue.
Hopefully you will apply to be a comissioner Pastor Syl. Certainly you would be an ideal candidate as you never show any bias against any person.
What the Hell does that mean?
What’s the pay scale?
depends on who you are going to vote for…
I hope all the people with big mouths on the blogs do apply and put their money where their mouths are. But like in many cases they don’t really want to do anything – complaining is much easier.
