Police Called To Altercation Between Gombeys
Last night [Dec 29] the police responded to a disturbance in Pembroke which involved an altercation between different Gombey troupes.
A police spokesperson said: “Around 10:25pm last evening, police responded to a report of a disturbance in the area of St Augustine’s Hill and Curving Avenue in Pembroke.
“Upon police arrival it was ascertained that two different Gombey troupes ‘met up’ as often happens during the holiday season, and a small altercation took place.
“Eventually calms heads finally prevailed and the troupes, their supporters and followers eventually went their own separate ways without further incident.”
Now the Gombey’s are fighting All ya’ll are making the Church look real good
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, that’s hilarious!
Wow! Even the gombeys at war!! What next (SMH)
supposed to a tribute to our ancestors! violence is creeping into every aspect of our lives
Only in Bermuda!
Schmucks!
What an utter disgrace to the tradition. What the hell are they dancing for if they’re going to behave like that?
Good lawd, even the Gombeys are scrappin’…
Gombey turf wars…
#stuffjustgotreal
There was oncer a Gombey Act banning the Gombeys…think it may still exist…oh dear!
It’s a recession gotta fight for them tips !
a part of our culture, just saying LOL
actually is though…although physical altercations were not the norm, each troupe form each parish had a jingle or rhyme about the other ones…check them out they are quite funny indeed….shame the parkside and 42 guys dont just have jingles for each other
I am too through……geesh……never a dull moment…..
LMAO! I have heard it all now!
There is nothing LMAO about this! It’s a disgrace! Gombeys are the one thing that unites “most” Bermudians Let’s not FU*K that up.. SMH
“most” ?
Yea ‘MOST’
Def not a disgrace. I’ve followed the gombeys all my life and I can tell you that this is nothing new. This has happened since before you and I was born. This is a form of unity between islanders my firend. The mere rivalry shows that we Bermudians have something in common. Its not a sign of the times getting worse as some would have us beleive, but simply our heitage in competitivness coming to light, again!
ok then
We have been told from days of old, these things shall come to pass. Unruly this n unruly that…..yet it doesn’t seem if it is being taken as ‘gospel’….. More crucial n serious events yet to come. Brace yourselves for impact. We’ve only just begun…..watch ye therefore; for we know not when these things shall come our way. Scouts motto……”BE PREPARED”….. Y’ALL.. The whole world of people are fed up to the gill. Get ready as we are on a collision course.
Is this a sign of things to come? Do we have to ban the bows and arrows?
Tell me why is this story even posted? This sort of thing has gone on for years! I don’t know why most of you are surprise. I am sorry to say but have any of you even been to one of these?
These gombey wars have been going on all my life. As a matter of fact it used to be a highlight when two groups clashed. The only difference is that these days the social climate has changed and everyone is on edge (rightfully so).
I was there when they clashed. It all started when one dancer had his hat knocked off by an opposing dancer and he felt disrespected, so he wanted to take it to another level.
I must commend the leaders of both troops and the police (who were on the scene in about 3 mins or less) for defusing the situation.
Bottom line. it only takes one @SS
OK so you had your hat knocked off…i guess it takes a different type of man these days to realize there are worse things that could happen in life, and even those are not worth fighting about. Our culture seems to be hung on “Me” issues…what about the community and the culture and history you are representing? Is it not disrespectful to the island as a whole to act this way in front of the whole world? Trust me when I say you lost more than your hat when you turned to violence to solve your emotional rage. There are too many unknown facts to make a judgment here, and whether or not the hat got knocked off on purpose is not the real issue, the real issue is it should never be raised to the level of physical confrontation. Little kids, visitors, and the world see this stuff and you have forgotten that you are representing culture and heritage of the WHOLE island not just your “ME” issues. You have shammed me to act in this disrespectful way but you do not see me fighting you in the street do you? Life is short mate, enjoy it and share some love because that evil hate you are sharing will destroy your life.
#&% Gombeys ALWAYS fight!!! nothing new to hear..they can not seem to clash with another group..its all about fun and giving back. smh.
I’m picturing Michael Jackson’s I’m Bad video – with more live drumming.
that or the opening scene to West Side Story
Epic lol!

*** need to go back to the authentic original form of gombey dance so that when these clashes come around they would feel confident enough to battle and defeat their opponent. They have changed their style of dance and feel disrespected when they are out danced.
I say this to say that they need not to go up against another group when it always leads to a fight. All other groups should keep that in mind and by pass them when they see them because this is not the first.
skank-ska ska-blank!
Tomahawks,Bows and Arrows……..they were just playin……
Ha ha ha ha…Gombey Wars…FFS….when will it be available on X-Box?
It amazes me how people are quick to make fun of something before they are quick to support their tradition. I am a Gombey (my group wasn’t involved in this) and as soon as I heard of this, I knew people would say crazy things. First of all, not all Gombeys act in this manner, so don’t caterogize us all. Secondly, If you have ever seen a Gombey Clash before you will know that they happen in very confined areas so some forms of contact might happen. With that said, it’s up to the leaders of each group to mutually control it. 9 times out of 10 Gombey clashes happen WITHOUT any incidents, because each group has some sort of mutual respect for each because most groups are related if you research their lineage. So with that said; I’m not sure why things escalated as far as they did, but rest a sure all the other group leaders do not CONDONE their action because it makes us ALL look bad. We are the Preservers of one BEST TRADITION IN THE WORLD. Continue to support us even though others try to cast a Black Cloud over US.
Thank You.
The Gombeys are to me a shining example of a community, respect, honor and obedience to the father, family and heritage & share with all the results of hard work and discipline. A little scrap is just glimpse into their warrior souls.
Dance on..
