Shield Semi-Final: Somerset Eagles Defeat Colts

December 28, 2012

With a spot in the Shield Final against Hamilton Parish up for grabs, the Devonshire Colts and Somerset Eagles began their battle last night [Dec 27] at the BAA Field.

Luck was not on the Somerset Eagles side, as within the first 15 minutes Marcus Johnson [leg injury] and Tristan Smith [asthma attack] were both carted away to King Edward Memorial Hospital.

Things appeared to get worse for the Somerset Eagles in the 32nd minute when Aaron Critchlow gave the Devonshire Colts the lead, however Darin Dowling equalized for the Somerset Eagles in the 43rd minute. Neither team would beat the opposing goalkeeper for the remainder of the game sending the match into extra time.

Five minutes into the first period of extra time the Devonshire Colts went in front when Keimo Gardener scored from close range. During his celebration Gardener was shown the yellow card for removing his shirt. One minute later the Devonshire Colts was reduced to ten men when Gardener committed a bookable offense and received his second yellow card and was dismissed.

Just when it seemed that the Devonshire Colts had booked their ticket to the final, Shentione Lambert had a long range shot go in under a diving Devonshire Colts goalkeeper in the 120th minute thus sending the game to kicks from the penalty mark to be decided.

During the penalty shootout Karl Brown became the Somerset Eagles hero as the goalkeeper made multiple saves, and helped his team advance to the finals with a 3 – 1 penalty shootout win.

Final score: Devonshire Colts 2 (1) Somerset Eagles 2 (3) – After Extra Time
