Island Games: Cayman Track Athletes Doubtful

January 22, 2013

Cayman Islands Athletics Association President Dalton Watler says the Cayman Islands may not be able to enter many track and field athletes in the 2013 Islands Games due to a lack of funding.

The 2013 Island Games will be held in Bermuda on 13th July – 19th July 2013.

In an interview with Cayman 27 News Television Station, Mr Watler said, “We have been having meetings. and from the very beginning I said the funding we have right now is to send our athletes to the CARIFTA Games.”

“I would much rather send my athletes to the CARIFTA Games than to send them to the Island Games. If funds become available we might consider sending a few athletes….a few.”

The International Island Games were founded in the Isle of Man in 1985 and today include 24 member islands in, or associated with, the sovereign nations of Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
