Archbishop Nicola Girasoli To Visit Bermuda
The Catholic Church in Bermuda will commemorate an important milestone this week-end, the 60th anniversary of its official establishment on-island. Catholic priests from Halifax, Nova Scotia had been serving in Bermuda since 1843, and in 1953 the first steps were taken which led to the creation of the Diocese in Hamilton, Bermuda.
Bishop Robert J. Kurtz, C.R. will welcome the Apostolic Nuncio Nicola Girasoli on his first visit to Bermuda for this special occasion. He will attend a series of events highlighted by his presiding at a Concelebrated Solemn Mass at noontime on this Sunday, 10th of March at St. Theresa’s Cathedral.
The Nuncio whose role can be described as a member of the Vatican Diplomatic Corps, represents the Pope before national governments for all the Antilles Episcopal Conference, which includes Bermuda. During his visit he will meet with Premier Craig Cannonier.
A series of activities with pastors, church leaders, the Mount Saint Agnes Academy Board as well as Parish and Finance Council members will give those working in the Diocese the opportunity to meet Archbishop Girasoli to share details of their efforts and receive guidance and direction from the Nuncio.
Bishop Kurtz has arranged for the Nuncio to learn more about Bermuda’s diverse faith communities at a private Ecumenical Leaders Luncheon to be held on Saturday. The Diocese is honoured to have other special guests arriving for the Anniversary: Archbishop Patrick Pinder of Nassau, Bahamas; Archbishop Anthony Mancini of Halifax, Nova Scotia and Bishop Douglas Crosby of Hamilton, Ontario.
The Very Rev. Salvatore Restivo, C.R., Provincial Superior of the Congregation of the Resurrection will be the guest speaker at a Diocesan-wide luncheon at the Hamilton Princess Hotel on Sunday following the Mass.
The Catholic Church in Bermuda has six parishes across Bermuda with more than 9,200 members islandwide.
