Regiment Appeal: Service Memorial Names

March 8, 2013

A memorial to honour those soldiers who died while being an active member of the Bermuda Regiment is to be created at Warwick Camp.

A Regiment spokesperson said, “As such we are appealing to members of the public to make sure the list of service personnel is as complete as possible. The process of appealing to the public for their input was used when creating the Bermuda War Memorial and proved essential.

“Once a comprehensive list is compiled from the records at Warwick Camp and the public’s knowledge, the names, records, and service dates will be verified by the National Archives and National Records – to ensure accuracy. It is vital that we exhaust every resource to create an accurate list.”

Criteria:

To be considered for inclusion on the memorial, the soldier must have been enlisted in the Regiment at the time of their death and be actively serving. Those who were deferred, awaiting exemption from service, or an absentee are not eligible.

Current list

Our list currently has 41 personnel on it. A spokesperson said, “This list has not been verified by the National Records or National Archives and some entries may be incorrect. In addition, some service information may be missing as they were deceased before the current electronic administration system was implemented at Warwick Camp. The missing information will be added.

“If you are able to provide any assistance in amending this list before our research begins, please contact the Regimental Sergeant Major WO1 Gavin Rayner: 238-3921 / gsrayner@gov.bm We kindly ask that you let the RSM know of anyone who may be missing from this list by Monday 18 March 2013.”

Are these people who have died in the act of duty, or just died whilst happening to be enlisted? If the latter, there is something a little bit odd about it, to be honest. It’s a bit morbid if it becomes a custom for organisations to have memorials for everybody who happened to have died whilst a member. That’s what we have cemetries for.

    • Bozey says:

@sandman….you are sleeping on the job!! It clearly states soldiers whi were active members! The was no “Bermuda Regiment” back in the day! It is not morbid…a nice way to say “We will always remember…”

    • Time Shall Tell says:

Looking at some of the names listed, some died in unrelated incidents to the regiment such as traffic accidents but died while being enlisted.

  2. john says:

Would this list also have names of those who are supposed to show but don’t show up every week and may have died through their negative actions??

  3. Simple says:

There always has to be someone to find something negative to say. Get a grip gosh!

    • Nice on part of Warwick Camp, but some guys on that list was most time not showing up at warwick camp??How can you honour someone who wanted no part of army life??if you are to have a list , than perhaps a list to show the men and women who served in the regiment over the years??but guess that would be to long of a list!!! Just saying

  4. P.S the only one i see on that list who died while serving his country is Major Wheddon..

    • TL says:

My brother is a part of this list. He at first hated every minute of it. And so did I. The regiment helped him go back to school and get his life on track. When he passed, they helped us pay for and organise his unexpected funeral, and as a result lifted a huge burden off of my family. I am forever grateful.

It’s not for everyone but the Bermuda Regiment is not all that bad, and this memorial serves as tribute to the soldiers who I’m sure felt the same way as I do.

After they’re done honoring these lads they need to terminate conscription in Bermuda.

  6. RawOnion says:

Some of you who comment on here are just daft. It is an honour to be recognized for serving in the Regiment at the time of a soldiers death regardless of their actual performance whilst serving. Only those who were actually serving, not those who’s names were in the draft list, will be listed. I see many names (some of whose funerals I attended) that I know from my time serving in the Regiment and many of them had a full Regiment funeral regardless of rank.

I actually find some of the comments already posted quite offensive to the deceased and the Regiment.
