BCB Congratulate Leverock On Jr. Athlete Award
The Bermuda Cricket Board [BCB] congratulated Kamau Leverock for receiving a National Junior Athlete Sponsorship, which will be used for him to attend a placement at Horsham Cricket Club in the Sussex Premier League.
Horsham has produced a number of English First Class cricketers and past overseas players include David Hussey [Australian T20 and One Day International] and Tim May [Australian Test and One Day Cricketer].
Horsham Cricket Ground is where Sussex County Cricket Club plays several games and Kamau will have the opportunity to play and train on a facility regarded as one of the best in the UK.
National Coach David Moore stated, “Kamau will be coached by some of the best coaches in the UK. Each coach will be ECB Level 4 qualified. These coaches are specialist coaches at county clubs including Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex as well as the MCC. He will also receive an individual strength and conditioning program as well as access to Christ Schools gymnasium.
“This facility is utilised by professional cricket and football teams. In addition, Kamau will receive opportunities to train [and possibly play] with Sussex CCC and receive coaching and bowl to the First Team. This exposure to international high performance preparation is an invaluable step to develop as an elite cricketer.”
Coach Moore continued, “Kamau will also have the opportunity to play for several representative teams such as the Duke of Norfolks XI at Arundel Castle against First Class and touring teams. He has the opportunity to work with the MCC Young Cricketers squad and train regularly at Lords. Through this scholarship Kamau will work with International teams including England, Australia and New Zealand as a net bowler and will be able to test himself against the best batsmen in the world.”
Coach Moore concluded by saying, “Kamau has shown himself to be a young man of the highest integrity, morals and ethics. He has been found to play the game in the correct spirit, has a very high work and practice ethic and has demonstrated a desire and passion to perform at his best at all times.
“He is highly respected by team mates, opposition players, coaches and administrators of the game and is an excellent role model to our younger cricketers. I would like to congratulate Kamau on this achievement and I am sure that he will make the most of the opportunity.”
President of the BCB, Lloyd Fray stated, “On behalf of the Board, I would like to congratulate Kamau on receiving this award. The BCB identified Kamau as a talented all-rounder who is currently in the UK studying where he played 2nd XI cricket for Sussex County Cricket Club.
“Kamau started in our National Academy U13 Squad at the age of 9 and at the age of 12 captained the team that played in Barbados and Canada receiving awards for Most Wickets in ICC Americas Premier U15 Tournament and Man of the Match against Canada in the ICC Americas Premier U15 Tournament.
“At only 14 years of age Kamau was playing in the U19 National Team. He debuted for the senior team at age 16 in Dubai where he scored his first senior international half century against UAE. He gathered bowling figures of 3 for 13 against Cayman Islands in ICC Americas Division One game.”
Mr. Fray concluded, “I would like to take this time to thank the Bermuda Government for their continued support of our young talented athletes and I look forward to following Kamaus progress over the course of the scholarship.”
