BEPRO Hosts First Lunch N’ Learn Of The Year
Bermuda’s Emerging Professionals [BEPRO] hosted its first Lunch N’ Learn of the year last week at the Chamber of Commerce, and the event proved to be quite a topic of interest for those in attendance.
The event, titled “Know Your Rights – Tips From the Pros”, featured a well rounded selection of expert guest speakers from Amnesty International Bermuda, the Human Rights Commission, the Department of Labour & Training, and Trott & Duncan [Nelleke Hollis, Sara Clifford, Bruce Lines and Kyle Masters, respectively]; all of whom provided excellent insight into how to protect and promote one’s rights on the job.
The main objective of the Lunch N’ Learn was to educate attendees about their basic rights at work and the relevant legislation as it pertains to them. Each speaker was given time to present on their topic, after which there was a healthy Q & A period; with the majority of attendees seeking answers to their pertinent questions.
Key takeaway points from the session included familiarizing yourself with the legislation available such as the Human Rights Act 1981 and the Employment Act 2000 [which can be found online at www.bermudalaws.bm], educating yourself on your place of employment’s policies around employee rights and protection, as well as being aware of what your contract states [or any file for that matter] before signing. The panelists also highlighted the right of the employee to request access to their personal files at any time and that seeking legal opinion on their employment contract prior to signing it is also a basic right.
All speakers actively encouraged attendees to seek legal clarification immediately should you find yourself in a workplace situation that you do not fully understand
