April 29, 2013

Bermuda Institute student Deshi Smith finished fourth in the New York High School Cycling League race in Yonkers, NY today. This was the first event of the newly formed league and it attracted approximately 50 student/athletes from the Empire State, plus Smith.

On a course that he described as similar to Bermuda’s Ferry Reach Park, Smith was plagued with a mechanical issue affecting his ability to shift gears smoothly and forcing him to adapt to a limited range of options.

Unfortunately the problems separated him from the leaders but he was able to eventually find a rhythm to the course and he made up ground to move from fifth to fourth on the last lap. Smith’s participation in the race was greatly assisted by the Junior Athlete Development Sponsorship Program.
