Hamilton Flagpole To Be Removed, Replaced

April 26, 2013

The City of Hamilton today announced that the flagpole at the junction of Front Street and Burnaby Hill will be
removed on Sunday [Apr 28], and will be replaced.

Chief Operating Officer and Secretary to the City of Hamilton Edward Benevides said, “The current flagpole has been in place since 1973. Over the years it has sustained damage and must be replaced.”

The flagpole being installed in 1973:

Mr Benevides continued, “The City will be without a flagpole until the new one arrives and is installed. The new flagpole will be identical to the one it replaces. It will be an 80 foot aluminum, nautical flagpole.”

Why don’t they wait until the new one arrives?

Is this the Corporation’s way of belittling the viewing stands for the May 24th parade?

    • Edward Benevides says:

The decision to remove the existing flagpole at this time was made by the COO and City Engineer based on the issues around safety and resourcing. The damage was clear and the replacement is already on order. I am not able to provide an installation date at this time as shipping, weather and resource availability are variable.

        Edward,
Is the existing flagpole the one that was replaced after being hit by one of the tall ships? When was this? Surely it was later than 1973?
How often is the flagpole inspected?
        When was the last inspection?
What happened to cause the flagpole to be deemed unsafe to such an extend that it requires immediate removal?
When was the new flagpole ordered?
Can you explain your statement that “the damage was clear”?
What are the issues around “resourcing”?

        Thanks.

I wonder if that dude in the middle really thinks he’s doing something.

hey, its the middle man that always does all the work lol

    • Micro says:

I’d go out on a limb here and say the pole is being lifted by a crane; the guy in the middle is holding it in the correct placement while the other two guys do whatever it is they’re doing

Give it me and I’ll re post it in my garden…
I can think of a flag I’d fly from it.
