BASS To Host World Oceans Day Celebration

May 15, 2013

World Oceans Day encourages thousands of people across the globe to take action and promote the importance of ocean conservation. On May 31st, the Bermuda Alliance for Sargasso Sea [BASS], a collaboration of ten leading conservation and research organisations, will be celebrating the message that together we have the power to protect the ocean.

The World Oceans Day event will highlight the work of Bermuda’s environmental, education, research, and conservation organisations and will celebrate our unique relationship with the ocean that surrounds our island. Representatives from numerous groups including BIOS, BUEI, BAMZ, Bermuda Sloop Foundation, the Bermuda Marine Debris Taskforce and the Bermuda Lionfish Taskforce will be on hand to talk about their efforts and share novel ideas for how we can work together to safeguard the ocean. Cordell Riley, author of the cultural case for the protection of the Sargasso Sea [for the Sargasso Sea Alliance], will give a short presentation on Bermuda’s cultural relationship with the Sargasso Sea.

BASS representative and President of Greenrock, Dr. Judith Landsberg, said “BASS was created to support efforts by the Bermuda Government and its international partners to ensure that the globally significant natural environment and unique biological richness of the Sargasso Sea is conserved for present and future generations. This year’s theme for World Oceans Day seems tailor made for our mission so we are delighted to be hosting the event this year, and are grateful to Bacardi for making it possible.”

Hosted by BASS and held in conjunction with Bacardi’s Corporate Responsibility month, the celebration will take place on May 31st, 5:30-7:30pm at Bacardi Limited, 65 Pitts Bay Road, Hamilton. The event is open to the public but guests must be registered in advance to attend; tickets are available for a $25 donation to BASS.
