BHI Offering Bermuda Hospitality Summer Camp

June 4, 2013

Open to young people ages eight to 13, Miles of Smiles camp participants will learn about and experience all the wonderful aspects of Bermuda that bring visitors to our shores.

“This summer camp was created with one goal in mind: showcasing Bermuda’s hospitality industry by engaging kids in a fun and meaningful way,” said Karla Lacey, Bermuda Hospitality Institute [BH!] CEO. “Kids are guaranteed a great time each week through a variety of special activities, as well as behind the scenes access that they otherwise would not have.”

The camp runs weekly throughout July and August. Each week focuses on a different part of the island: Eastern/Western/City & Central /Shore & Sound. Running from 8.30-4pm, every day starts off with a lesson in hospitality at the Bermuda Hospitality Institute’s offices on King & Reid Street (across from the Tribe Road Kitchen). Then it’s off to explore, interact and have fun.

“Every camp includes a chef-led cooking lesson at International Imports/The Chefs Shop, followed by a dining etiquette and table setting lesson atthe Fairmont Hamilton Princess,” said Ms Lacey.

There’s also a sporting element with professional instructors, tours of guest houses, hotels and cultural hot spots.

“We’ve mirrored the best Bermuda has to offer by incorporating ecological and cultural activities both on land and sea,” said Ms Lacey.

Here are a few highlights of the Miles of Smiles programme :
Miles of Smiles East [Offered both July 1-5 & August 5-9]
Starts with a behind the scenes tour of L.F. Wade International Airport! Campers will visit the tower as a flight is welcomed into Bermuda and tour the Weather Station. There’s a UNESCO treasure hunt, private tennis lesson and a guided eco tour of Tom Moore’s Jungle with swimming in the caves.

Miles of Smiles City & Central! [Offered July 8-12 only]
There so many spots in the City of Hamilton that we pass on a daily basis but have no idea of its
historical significance so we kick off with a Town Crier led walking tour! In addition there are
visits to art galleries, tours of guest houses, a professional tennis lesson AND pro golf lesson!

Miles of Smiles West! [July 15-19 & August 19-23]
From Southampton to Dockyard there are activities galore! Starting with a treasure hunt at the furthest tip of the island, the week also includes a Power Snorkel Tour in Dockyard.

Miles of Smiles Shore & Sound! [Offered July 22-26 only]
This week celebrates all that’s best living surrounded by water with golfing a lesson on the picturesque Belmont Hills Golf Course and guided snorkeling in Hog Bay Park.

“To ensure participants get the most out of their Miles of Smiles experience, the camp maximum is 12 students per week,” said Ms. Lacey. The cost is $325 per person and includes all activities. “To ensure this experience is open to as wide a segment of the population as possible, limited financial assistance is being made available for those who otherwise could not afford to attend.”
