Centre On Philanthropy’s Summer Intern Day

July 26, 2013

Last Friday [July 19] The Centre on Philanthropy [CoP] celebrated its 5th annual Summer Intern Community Day, where summer interns and some of Bermuda’s leading companies spend the day learning the joys of giving back to the community for charity.

The Centre on Philanthropy coordinated this special event which saw over a 100 volunteers from 9 companies complete 9 projects for local charities. The projects included everything from cleaning the BAMZ sea Turtle enclosure to meal preparation with The Eliza Dolittle Society.

“Each summer the students bring so much enthusiasm and energy to these projects,” said Jennifer Pitcher, Volunteer Coordinator for The Centre on Philanthropy. “It’s incredible what can be done in just one day, and they have a lot of fun too!”

One of the ways the students have fun is through some friendly competition. For the last two years CoP has held a Facebook Photo Challenge for the event that has proved to be so popular, the challenge is on again this year!

For The Challenge each team of students is required to take a photo that best represents their project and their company and submit it to CoP’s Facebook page. Teams have until Tuesday July 30 at 1:00pm to encourage the most ‘likes’ for their photo from their peers and colleagues and the team with the most likes wins the Challenge. The competition is fierce and saw interns from Ernst & Young win last year’s challenge.

Participating companies for this year’s Community Day were: XL Group, Validus, KPMG, ACE Group, Butterfield Bank, Endurance Specialty Insurance Ltd., PwC, Ernst & Young Ltd. and Catlin Insurance Company Ltd. along with nine local charities for a day of volunteering.

The charities, their parings and activities were: XL Group with The Eliza Dolittle Society [meal preparation]; Validus with Project 100 [landscaping]; KPMG with Somersfield Academy [painting]; the ACE Group with WindReach Bermuda [Healthy Harvest]; Butterfield Bank with the Bermuda Sea Cadet Association [landscaping and painting]; Endurance Specialty Insurance Ltd. with National Maritime Museum [cleaning boat lofts]; PwC with The Eliza Dolittle Society [meal preparation]; Ernst & Young Ltd. with the Bermuda Museum Aquarium and Zoo [cleaning the Sea Turtle enclosure]; and Catlin Insurance Company Ltd. with Family Centre [Cup Match Tag Day preparations].

The Centre on Philanthropy said they would like to a big thank all of the companies, interns and charities for participating in the Summer Intern Community Day and the Facebook Photo Challenge.

CoP facilitates three Community Days each year by giving local charities the opportunity to submit volunteer projects that can be completed in one day. The Centre then encourages participation from companies and projects are chosen based on the interest expressed by employees. The Centre on Philanthropy also holds an annual “Family Community Day” to give families an opportunity to work together and assist Bermuda’s charities with important projects.
