Beating Of The Retreat Honours Former ADCs

July 28, 2013

photoThe Beating of the Retreat on Wednesday night [July 24] was in honour of the ex-Aides de Camp [ADCs] to past Governors of Bermuda.

At the march-off, the Salute was taken by Captain [Retired] Alvin Daniels. Captain Daniels is the first Bermudian to be appointed as ADC to a Governor of Bermuda.

Captain Daniels took up that post in July 1973. Since then, all ADC’s have been Bermudian. The current ADC is Captain Clifford Powell.

The last non-Bermudian to hold the post was Captain Hugh Sayers, Welsh Guards, who was assassinated at Government House in 1973.

Five ex-ADCs, Eugene Raynor, David Gibbons Jr, Eddie Lamb, William White, and Brian Gonsalves, went on to become Commanding Officers of the Bermuda Regiment. Larry Mussenden later became Attorney General and Marc Telemaque became Cabinet Secretary.

During a major Royal Visit, the ADC can be bumped up to become a Royal Equerry and can then find himself working directly to and for the Royal Household.
