July 14: Road Closures For Island Games Race
The Bermuda Bicycle Association has warned people that on Sunday [July 14] the Island Games cycling road race will take place and a number of roads will be closed.
A spokesperson said, “As you are probably aware, this weekend sees the start of a massive international sporting event in Bermuda, the 2013 NatWest Island Games, bringing 2,000 competitors and visitors to our beautiful island for a week of sporting action.
“As a part of the Games there will be a cycling road race on Sunday, July 14th. The course follows a loop from Frog Lane, Middle Road to Flatts, North Shore Road to Barkers Hill roundabout, Palmetto Road and back along Frog Lane. In order to ensure the safety of the competitors the Bermuda Police and Works & Engineering have agreed to close the roads in the direction of the race [east on Middle Road to Flatts, west on North Shore to Barkers Hill] from 7:45AM until 11:30AM that morning.
“Frog Lane, between Palmetto Road and Parsons Road will be closed in both directions. Accommodations for scheduled public buses have been made to allow usual routes to be followed. Also, there will be approximately 50 volunteer marshals along the route to assist with traffic movement.
“We recognize that this may be an inconvenience to members of our community and for this we apologize in advance. But it is critical to the success of this specific event, the NatWest Island Games and to our country that we provide competition venues which are safe as well as representative of our beautiful island.
“So we are asking for your support and consideration. If you are planning on heading out that morning in your car or motorbike please give some advance consideration to how you can get to your destination by an alternative route. This may add a few minutes to your usual time but the warm and friendly spirit of Bermuda will certainly understand the need for this interruption. Of course, we would encourage you to come out and watch this exciting event and to cheer on our local athletes!”
