A spokesperson said, “We must give special thanks to Hunt’s Food and Supplies who have donated the major food items to the chefs. This ensures that costs for this event are kept to a minimum and that all proceeds can be applied to the Youth Development Fund.”
The Cook-Off is being held to raise funds for the ADHT Youth Development Programme. In addition to sending a student to the 2013 ADHT conference to be held in Lafayette, Louisiana this year, in the future money from this fund will be used to develop an ADHT colouring book for 4 – 7yr olds showcasing the various ADHT sites. Plans are to provide this book free of charge to students in this age group.
This year’s Cook-Off has special significance as the ADHT is partnering with CedarBridge Academy [CBA] to assist the school in sending up to six of their students to this year’s ADHT Conference.
At a recent presentation by the ADHT a teacher from CBA saw the connection between what the ADHT is doing and the goal of her Preserving Our Heritage course which “seeks to teach students to not only appreciate their local heritage but also the importance of documenting and preserving it using modern technology”.
She felt that the African Diaspora Heritage Trail Conference would allow her students the unique experience of seeing how a cultural concept that started in their small island country was spreading across the Diaspora, hopefully engendering in them a sense of national pride. In keeping with the goal of the course students would have the opportunity to talk with persons from across the Diaspora about how other countries “preserve their heritage”.
The spokesperson said,”We welcome interested partners like CBA who share our goals of educating the community, especially young people, about Bermuda, Africa and the Diaspora. ”
The African Diaspora Heritage Trail [ADHT] is an international cultural initiative that promotes socially conscious travel to sites identified as relevant and important to the global narrative of the people and culture of Africa. It is designed to educate and safeguard the core values and creativity of African cultures and history in each of the host countries.
Tickets are $25 when bought ahead of the event or $30 at the door. Tickets are available from 27th Century Boutique, the chefs themselves, members of the committee or by emailing maxine@adht.bm to reserve a ticket.
