Michael Misick Dismisses Plea Bargain Report
Former Turks and Caicos Islands Premier Michael Misick — who has been arrested in connection with corruption allegations — has dismissed reports that he is negotiating a plea bargain with authorities that would implicate others, the TCI Sun reports.
Last week an editorial from the TCI Journal said they are “told that Michael Misick is in plea bargain negotiations”, and also stated that Misick “is said to have information on crimes dealing with United States citizens and senior politicians in Jamaica, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.”
The TCI Sun said they have obtained a hand-written letter [click here to view] from Mr Micick to his brother dated August 1, 2013, which he stated: “I hear the TCI Journal and their British sponsors is up to their old tricks by putting out online a bunch of bull s**t about me.
“These people are so low and will stoop to anything to try to further destroy me. I am strong in my faith and will never give up no matter what they do…All I can do is keep on praying and be patient that God will soon deliver me from prison here either home or free here in Brazil.”
The TCI Sun also reports that the former Premier’s brother Phillip Misick “categorically denied” the TCI Journal plea bargain report which he described as another “feeble attempt to prejudice the case against his younger brother.”
According to the TCI Sun’s report, Phillip Misick said he “strongly believes the TCI Journal article was another organised leak that was crafted by the SIPT.”
“I can tell you as a matter of fact that Mike has not even spoken to any British or American law enforcement authorities and he has not made any plea bargain with anyone,” Phillip Misick told the TCI Sun.
Misick has been accused of corruption, and fled the Turks & Caicos Islands last year after an arrest warrant was issued for him. He said he was “not a fugitive” and had applied for “political asylum” seeking protection from political persecution.” He was located and arrested in December 2012 in Brazil.
Due to the allegations of widespread corruption, the UK imposed direct rule on the Turks and Caicos Islands in 2009 and power was transferred to the UK-appointed Governor. Power was handed back to the Turks & Caicos in November 2012.
