Regiment Recruitment Event On September 25
Bermuda Commanding officer Lt Col Foster-Brown said that potential volunteers are invited to attend Government House on 25 September for a presentation on the Regiment.
During this event, potential volunteers will be given a presentation on what advantages are to be gained by joining the Island’s military unit. In attendance will also be some of the most recent recruits who will be able to share their views and answer any questions from the audience. The event will take place from 6-7pm, followed by a short reception where those in attendance will have the chance to meet some serving personnel.
The Adjutant, Major Benjamin Beasley said “This invitation is also open to family members, friends, and civilian employers who have, or who may have a soldier working for them. We feel that it is extremely important that potential volunteers have the support from their loved ones and their civilian employers. The event isn’t to strong arm anyone into joining – it’s a chance for members of the public to gain a better insight as to what is expected of our soldiers, especially during their first year.”
He continued, “The process of transitioning from a civilian to a soldier can be a daunting one and we are there to answer any questions that a potential soldier, their spouse, parent, or employer may have about service life. Naturally, I am a little biased, but no other organisation offers what we do. The pride of serving your country is immense. All the positive attributes that come with service life are superb, but we know that everyone needs to put bread on the table. In return for your service, a basic Private Soldier will receive $140 per day of service, which equates to approx $2000 for their first Recruit Camp, and $4,700 per year; and as you gain seniority your pay will increase.”
Interested people will need to call 238-3885 to register as a visitor to Government House, preferably by 18 September.
The CO summarised, “Many potential recruits may be apprehensive: don’t be – the vast majority of volunteers and conscripts find their time in the Regiment a rewarding experience and the 60% are volunteers [although many joined as conscripts]. Further, one of the Chain-of-Command’s key responsibilities is your welfare and we all have a vested interest in you settling in as quickly as possible.
A spokesperson said, “Anyone who is unable to join us on the 25th is encouraged to attend Enlistment Nights on 1 and 3 October at Warwick Camp. The camp will be open from 6-8pm. There are a few items which you will need to bring such as ID, and potential volunteers are encouraged to call the Regt HQ on 238-3885, email bermudaregiment@gov.bm or visit website.”
