Hand Made Bermuda To Host Grand Opening
Hand Made Bermuda — a retail outlet in the Clocktower Mall in Dockyard — will be hosting their official Grand Opening this coming Saturday [Oct 26], set to showcase a variety of goods made by local artists.
The store, which is the brainchild of Jan Quinn and Andrea Moniz, features beautiful and unique hand made goods for visitors and locals. The store stocks both arts and crafts made in Bermuda, as well as imported craft supplies.
Ms Quinn used to work in an office but longed to spend her day in colourful surroundings, making things. She started making sea glass jewellery and soon it was being stocked in the Dockyard Arts Centre. She worked towards making it a full-time enterprise, started going to all the markets with her jewellery, and eventually resigned from her office job.
Ms Moniz’ position was made redundant after many years working in a bank. She decided to learn how to make body, foot and face scrubs made from all-natural ingredients such as Bermuda honey, brown sugar and extra virgin olive oil. She also started to attend all the markets, selling her products under the name ‘Moniz Made.’
Ms Quinn and Ms Moniz met and learned a lot from doing the markets, but they were at the mercy of the weather, and found that the constant unpacking and packing could be exhausting. They were thrilled to find a unit in the Clocktower Mall, and opened quietly in July.
Ms Moniz’ husband Alex, a self-employed carpenter, got to work on the actual shop, and they called upon friends from the markets to provide their locally-made goods to stock the shelves, and over the next few weeks added new artists’ work every week.
Some of the items they stock include sea glass and bead jewellery, dichroic glass jewellery, natural body scrubs and soaps, art prints, photography, oil and watercolour paintings, locally made jams, hand knitted and crocheted goods, tote bags, locally designed tea towels, mouse mats, greetings cards, bags, T shirts and hats, hand dyed silk items, hand made childrens’ clothes, toys, ornaments, cedar goods, books and CDs by local artists, and much more.
Their craft supplies section offers items including beads and findings [jewellery-making components], tools, scrapbooking papers and embellishments, and knitting yarn, and they intend to expand this range as time goes by.
The Grand Opening will be held on Saturday 26th October between 2pm and 6pm, and will feature refreshments, giveaways, and also the opportunity to meet some of the local artists who will discuss their work.
The store is located at the end of the Clocktower Mall. For more information please contact them via phone at 232 0862 or email at handmadebermuda@icloud.com

Good luck, you are going to need it!
It is not luck that is needed. It’s a feasible business plan, and this certainly is one that Bermuda has long needed. Think about it.
