Seven Bermudians To Begin Cruise Ship Jobs
Late this afternoon [Oct 4] on behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Director of the Department of Workforce Development, Mr. George Outerbridge bid farewell to Bermuda’s newest Norwegian Cruise Line [NCL] employees.
This weekend, Nicolas Butterfield, Brian Morris, Darnell Knight, Denika Outerbridge, Jasmine Simmons, Dominic Roberts and Joliza Vanderpool are set to start their new jobs onboard the NCL mega ship the Norwegian Gem, which sails out of New York on Sunday.
And Mr. Outerbridge noted that the Department of Workforce Development is now gearing up to support Norwegian Cruise Lines’ ongoing Bermuda recruitment programme.
Earlier this year the Department of Workforce Development launched an employment partnership programme with the Norwegian Cruise Line, and a two day recruitment drive was held in Bermuda in July.
Two human resource executives from Norwegian Cruise Line visited the island, and 85 Bermudians attended the recruitment fair.
Speaking last month, Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy said: “Planning to determine the frequency with which we will host Norwegian Cruise Line representatives to conduct ongoing recruitment is in progress.
“We are confident that this programme will continue to grow and more Bermudians will be given opportunities to secure on-board employment.
“The Norwegian Cruise Line initiative is being used as a blueprint for the development of additional job placement programmes with other global organizations that do business in Bermuda.”

Yes congrats to all with the potential unlimited opportunities available. Well inquiring minds want to know, and I’m going to ask the questions that no one wants to ask! Exactly what will they be doing? What are the hrs? and What is the hourly rate? And don’t shout me down for asking, because we all know that these cruise lines have to employ people from third world countries that don’t mind working long hrs for what we in Bermuda would never be able to survive on. Hence the concern. Just wondering how it all fits. But giving the economic projections by those in the know, maybe that’s where the Island is heading. Massive pay cuts for all ( well not all just the poor people)! Don’t shout me down now….Go ahead….. there I’ve said it….Yah Y’all were thinking it any way…Peace out

Good Luck and I hope the experience profoundly and powerfully benefits your careers and outlook. You will soon realise that cruise ship personnel are a veritable United Nations which is a wonderful opportunity to learn and soon after realise how lucky we have been in Bermuda with the opportunities we have – which brings me to my main point:
This Government cannot seriously think there is a future placing our youth in what is effectively Third World, exploitive work, or can they? Perhaps Crockwell and company are just that naive? My experience (very close to on board food and beverage – logistics side) is that the cruise industry not only survives but thrives by producing a product at a price that can only be achieved by effecting the employment practices of a 19th Century sweat shop. This might be acceptable to the poorest nationalities (Indians, Phililpinos, Ecuadorians, Jamaicans), but is this really the future we expect for our children? Perhaps one of these young folk will be the person who finally succeeds in bringing genuine Union recognition and workers’s rights to this most cynical of industries.
So exciting! A great opportunity for young Bermudians to get real world and IB experience. Enjoy you Onions!
