PLP Extend Support To Caribbean Flood Victims
The PLP said they wish to extend support for the victims of the flood crisis in St. Lucia and St. Vincent, saying that “our Caribbean neighbors and kin are in need of our prayers and assistance.”
Flooding and landslides caused by heavy rains have killed at least eight people in the Caribbean, leaving many more displaced. In a heavily hit area in northwestern St. Vincent, a family of five was killed when another house was swept into their home.
The latest report [PDF] from the Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Management Agency [CDEMA] said, “Reports of deaths, destruction and severe damage due to high winds and torrential rains; causing land slippage and overflowing rivers were received from Dominica, Saint Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.”
The full statement from Acting PLP Leader Derrick Burgess is below:
The PLP wishes to extend our support for the victims of the flood crisis in St. Lucia and St. Vincent. Our Caribbean neighbors and kin are in need of our prayers and assistance. Many Bermudians have ties to these nations and we must send the message that all of our global neighbors are equally as important.
“We wish to reach out to the West Indian Association of Bermuda, to offer our organizational assistance. We are encouraging other local organizations to assist where they can, with items that have been identified as urgently needed.

As Bermuda is an associate member of Caricom, we would implore the OBA government to extend every form of assistance to our Caribbean neighbors.
MP Walter Roban has been appointed to act as the PLP’s coordinator for this cause. Over the next couple of days he will provide instructions on where these items may be delivered.
He may be reached at Whroban@northrock.bm
While this is an admiral goal, having witnessed firsthand the impact of 14 years of the PLP’s “organizational assistance” over the Government coffers the victims of these floods would be better served with the opposition digging into their own pockets rather than volunteering to organize anything.
does it matter if the plp are the ones asking for assistance didnt our government donate fifty thousand to the phillipines? or are you just prejudiced? is this tragedy to be undermined because of the party asking for asisstance?
smdh I agree 100% with what you’ve written…Please fellow Bermudians, let us keep politics out of this!
Ya got a point there ‘-
Pretty hash words but true’ but than again the OBA my have encountered backlash from Mark Bean [ PLP ]
for donating out of the People’s purse – Politics and Politricks !
Please re-read the initial comment, this has absolutely nothing to do with race.
The stated goal is admirable, however, the PLP’s track record of incompetence when it comes to “organisational” skills is abundantly clear; we have 6,000,000,000 examples of their capabilities – or more accurately lack thereof.
The victims would be better served if the Opposition simply donated goods rather than their ‘management’ services in the form of a clearing house for donations.
And for those who feel the assistance should be apolitical (which I agree with) please direct your ire at the PLP for “implor[ing] the OBA government to extend every form of assistance to our Caribbean neighbors.” The entire point of this press release was political.
Typical Colonial minded Bermudians
Proof that even suffering has a color for some of you people. And you all say it’s just all in our minds…..well here you go people: It’s real.
I wish it wasn’t too.
LOL
A little strange that they would be asking electrical for items such as Refrigerators. This considering that to the best of my knowledge the majority both St Lucia and St Vincent use 220 Volt 50 cycle power meaning that appliances from here and the US will not work (or will need to be modified)
The PLP are free to organize anything they like and we the public are free to offer our assistance to this cause. It seems that there is no shortage of funds when it comes to Bermudians buying champagne according to the news, so why shouldn’t or can’t we donate to our brothers and sisters in need. No one mentioned how strapped we are for funds when it came to sending money to the Philipines, that is correct, but rather than get into the usual tit-for-tat situation, those who have the will and capacity to help let them. But since Government said they have money put aside for such occasions, I am sure they will donate on our behalf again, right OBA?
“It seems that there is no shortage of funds when it comes to Bermudians buying champagne”
..or when buying those 20 inch rims or flat screen tvs for your BMW while living at mommas apartment.. SMFH
Why did you only confine it to champagne purchases?
No problem with Government donating to St Vincent & St Lucia but make it proportional to the numbers affected. $50,000 was for how many millions affected? The islands have only how many thousands affected?
The PLP can do whatever they like. They will send support in the form of prayers. Try cashing prayers in for food. Highly unlikely that they will dig into their own pockets & send money.
Proportional to the numbers affected? Since when was this a benchmark? Just Curious.
I agree w/ mixitup. The real question is do we have the money?
LOL
64w don’t even realize that he/she exposed the thinking of most obe(white) folk in Bermuda. Oba can send our money to the philippeans, and the PLP supports the effort without criticism. Couple months later, our NEIGHBOURS and for some, family members, experience floods, PLP is organizing a community based relief effort…..and PRESTO…..the racist, anti-Caribbean, anti-black, anti PLP folk speak first. I blame the puppet surrogates inside the Oba. You are the ultimate parasites of others!
They’ve BEEN ‘exposed’!! This thinking reminds me of the movie Mandela.
I thought it was odd I agreed with you earlier. Dude check your predjudice.
LOL
is all of your comment really necessary because of one comment above?? take a break betty! i think your comment is a bit more offensive than the original one that you are referring to.. or maybe you just rambling off on your usual hate filled manner?
HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL !!
HI @INNA and the other UBPoba diehards…first of ALL HAPPY NEW YEAR AND WISHING YOU THE BEST IN 2014..
.I am enjoying it… I saw it come in NEW ZEALAND..now on my way back to AUSTRILA …what a wonderful time I am having…what a great way to experience the NEW YEAR !!
Too busy to write…but please calling my name for someone else, other folks have their own opinions as well, and I think you should respect others point of views, just as you expect them to listen to you !!
OH WELL DONE PLP>>I PRAY GOD WILL BLESS THEM AND PROVIDE FOR THEM DURING THIS MOST DIFFICULT TIME.
I know you love me, but please Inna…… get it right…I will use my name when making a comment, no need to use someone elses name…REALLY !!
HAPPY NEW YEAR….GOD BLESS…..ENJOY…. I must get back to the party now….
whew, there you are! i thought we lost you in cyberspace for a minute
Maybe we did, or “Betty” got a new e-mail for the new year.
Ya that one comment reps all us white people…crazy inna
LOL
“and the PLP supports the effort without criticism”
hahaha you plp ppl r funny. there was de BIGGEST backlash over this. and if you clearly don’t remember this then you truly are dumbed down.

You truly are a vile, racist demagogue, aren’t you?
Can you PLEASE try to show some honesty and integrity?
This misinformation campaign of rewriting reality and attacking an entire group of people based solely on their race is really disgusting.
you’re a c***!
“…..and PRESTO…..the racist, anti-Caribbean, anti-black ”
@ Concerned citizen…Where was anybody racist, anti-Carribean or anti-black???…. that is in your Head. Perhaps you need to check your hate out in 2013 and move forward for 2014.
You seriously tring to paint all supporters of the OBA that way? Just think of past comments from the PLP mouth peices out here and in the house over the last couple of years. Am I suppose to draw the conclusion that all PLP supporters are race baiting bigots that hate white people with like two to three white members that all ran for the PLP while doing no time in the party jumping ahead of so many that have been working hard for the PLP for years ahead of them…why is that again?
LOL Personally I would support this just like I supported the help to the Philipians so what do “we” do about it? Do we have the money to do so?
I hope our Caribbean born police realize that the OBA and thier folk hate the Caribbean, for obvious reasons.
whoa!! where is this coming from? all you are trying to do is stir the sh!tpot, betty!
Inna, interesting you would critic Concern Citizen, but fail to critically examine the words written by the Diehard UBPoba supporters, which do not real very kindly at all.
HAPPY NEW YEAR AGAIN>>> ENJOY >>>GOD BLESS YOU !!
I am sad you are attempting to turn this good thing done by the PLP into something negative. I hope you will come on board and assist us with helping our brothers and sisters in the Islands. I look forward to your assistance. I will send something from afar to assist our people.
Love YOU so MUCH !!
What is sad is your defense of an obvious racist.
Betty Trump learned nothing from Mandela.
It’s ok when they do it.. come keep up.
LOL
What crap you write. Slimeball.
You are so brainwashed man! Sad really..
Am I reading that list right? Drapes?!
Wow, racist much? The guy made a comment about the lack of organisation skills in the PLP AFTER he claims it is an admirable goal and you think this is evidence of racism against blacks and racial predudice against the Caribbean population…which you clearly assume to be all black.
Pathetic.
thank you! i was thinking the same thing, betty is on a rampage today i guess
Totally agree!! I have read and reread multiple times the article and comments, and the only racial comments are coming from one side??? And we wonder why Bermuda is in the predicament we find ourselves in??? The plp supporters are using this as a political arena??? Shame on them!!!!!
I bet if it were the OBA featured in this article he would have had compliments instead of criticism. There are folk that twist stuff around and try to paint the PLP as a whole with a bad brush. It is total foolishness.
If the PLP put on an event to raise money for a charity; the same folk: 32n64w, Mike Hinds, Hmmm, inna, Triangle Drifter etc. would cleverly find a way to twist the logic behind the event and convey harsh criticism. When people twist the good fortune and logic, there is more to play than just opinion. Predisposition, allegiance and prejudice come to mind.
What we need is an up date in say 10 days buy Bernews that shows just how much the plp actually did for this cause??? Then we will see if it was all political or not??
To all people affected,
I wish you all the best in your recovery efforts going forward.
Please do not let a few ignorant comments and the attempted politicization regarding your tragedy taint your view if Bermuda and her people.
I am not too sure how we have become such a hate filled bunch and how any and every story becomes a battle of ignorance amongst these posters. But we have and hopefully the New Year will bring change to the island’s current us vs. them mentality. I doubt it tho.
Anyways, again, I sincerely wish the best for the people affected by this storm and would like to express sincere condolences to all those who have lost a loved one or negatively impacted in anyway by this event.
One Love.
BDA
@BM- I am hopeful, for all of our sake, that the hate filled trolls that scout these sites all day represent the smallest, most minute, segment of our population and are not even worth concerning ourselves with!! Unfortunately, these online sites are often offer a window into the life and culture in Bermuda from those outside, and can even more often leave a bad taste in prospective visitors mouths… sad!
Ditto to the comment above.. One Love Bermuda!!!
@INNA, have you forgotten to look in the mirror,,..the biggest Trolls are the UBPoba diehards …..STOP WITH TURNING EVERYTHING INTO RACE WAR>>>TALKING ABOUT RACE IS NOT RACIST, but can be a health conversation, if you not uncomfortable with it !!
HAPPY NEW YEAR and GET A GRIP ON LIFE !! ENJOY IT !! WHAT A BLESSING !!
MUCH LOVE TO YOU !!
“but can be a health conversation” yes it can but not with people that have your views then it not a conversation it’s you and others with your views yelling at others that if they where willing to have the conversation with you in the first place proble never agreed with structural or any racism anyway. So infact you are just harden people to the situation much like the political tactis of the Republicans.
LOL but you might not see that.
@Bermuda Male… “LETS WORK TO HELP OTHERS IN NEED”
Thanks Bermuda Male for your brilliant comment. WELL SAID !!
This is a very important thing the PLP are doing on behalf of our brothers and sisters in the Islands. We should always reach out to help or assist others in need. I am most impressed that we are reaching out to others in need during this most difficult time. I will also attempt to give something to assist. I will do my part as well. I believe that the more we give the more God will give back to you !!
HAPPY NEW YEAR
WELL DONE PLP
WISHING ALL THE BEST IN 2014. MUCH LOVE TO ALL>
My, we do have a sorry, pitiful bunch here. What does race have to do with this? I know I used a big word for some, proportional.
Proportional has nothing to do with race & everything to do with an appropriate sized response. If $50,000 was donated to the Philippine cause for say, 100,000 people affected, that is only 50c per person.
If 20,000 were affected in the islands & the Bermuda Government only sends $10,000, that is still 50c per person.
Are those in the islands worth more? If so, why? The Bermuda connection there? Most of the once expats who arrived here from the islands arrived at their own expense & free will.
They abandoned the islands for a better life here. Now some have gone back & bought luxury homes there. The new elite.
HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL !!

HEY OBAubp…DIEHARDS< stop trying to turn something positive into a RACE WAR…GET OVER IT…and do something positive for a change to help our BROTHERS AND SISTERS in the Islands…..GOD will bless you even more !!! Give and it will be given back to you !!
LOVE YOU
HAPPY NEW YEAR !
You will use your name but one e-mail isn’t enough? So is the plp outsourcing now?
Wow, your proportionality argument reminds me of my school text book which said “Slavery in Bermuda was of a more benign form than that practiced in the Southern United States and the Caribbean…”. Your comment is from the same trend of thought….one can have benign slavery; just like one can provide aid to people blindly and proportionally. Here’s a thought, how about assessing the NEED and assisting accordingly? But I get it, strong, free Caribbean people have always made the likes of you uncomfortable. You see their suffering and all of a sudden we must give proportionally…..
And as for people who abandoned somewhere for a “better life”, plenty of Brits, Scots and Welsh, Canadians and Americans did the exact same thing but the narrative with them is always how much they’ve done for Bermuda, never what they got out of being here.
And yes, you have managed to piss me off.
I couldn’t have said it better! This Triangle character lives in a bubble. Sad case.
You might like to educate yourself some on the history of Bermuda rather than rely on folklore or history skewered to suit a political agenda.
Start with a book called “In the eye of all trade”. Quite an enlightening insight into life in Bermuda up to around the US Civil War.
Indeed bringing everything down to race is so old fashioned. So last Government. So 1998 – 2012.Some people cannot get beyond it.
Word of de day: PLPathetic
Why was Dominican republic missed off the article in terms of aid…they were affected too ????
“The PLP wishes to extend our support for the victims of the flood crisis in St. Lucia and St. Vincent. Our Caribbean neighbors and kin are in need of our prayers and assistance”
but…
“Reports of deaths, destruction and severe damage due to high winds and torrential rains; causing land slippage and overflowing rivers were received from Dominica, Saint Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.”
(Learned something new)
OK Dominica is part of the Lesser Antillies, but why was it missed.
Well, let’s just wait and see what Woban comes up with. By the looks of the usual characters here and their comments this was a PLP set-up from the get-go.
So your saying that the PLP organized this whole tragedy just so they can then offer a local relief drive all for the sole purpose of steering the pot on this forum? REALLY???
I am saying that the PLP haven’t organised squat as of yet and all they have done is held a press conference calling for support for victims of a tradegy.
I await evidence of them actually doing something.
