Golf: Aon Benfield Fecchio Cup Begins Today

January 2, 2014

The Bermuda Junior Golf Association’s [BJGA] Aon Benfield Fecchio Cup kicks off today [Jan 2] at Port Royal Golf Course. This is a 54 hole stroke play event and is the 31st playing of the Fecchio Cup.

In the 16 – 18 division, there is a small but strong field, with arguably one of Bermuda’s most in-form local golfers, Cory DeSilva, who has won the past two Bermuda Golf Association Monthly Medal events, playing alongside Arriek Douglas, fresh back from school in Florida, and defending champion Sam Wehmeyer.

Also in the field is a newcomer to the BJGA, Mykal Donkin, looking to make his mark in his first BJGA major event, and Jordan Saunders, who is looking to pull a surprise in his final year of junior golf.

The 13 – 15 division is the BJGA’s most closely contested division week-to-week, and we expect the first Major of the year to be no exception. Every player in this division has been working hard on his game over the past year and there are a number of players looking to take out defending champion Brady Cordeiro on his home course.

Port Royal members Alex Mason and Benjamin Barnett will be looking to capitalise on their local knowledge while Dakota Lamb, Mikus Ming, and Kheary Swan will be looking for their hard work to bear fruit. 12-year-old Joe Waters is looking to pull a surprise, playing up into this division for the first time and focused on pushing his older competitors to their limit.

The open red division is a late change from the 12 and under division to ensure that players of similar ability are able to compete with each other, regardless of age. Kenny Leseur has been fairly dominant in this division over the past couple of seasons; however, he will be pushed all the way this week by a field of rapidly improving players led by Joe Watson and Tyler Emery.

Luke Watson is fresh back from boarding school to play, and another relative newcomer, John Dragonetti, is making his BJGA major debut. Alex Withers-Clark, a talented footballer, is taking advantage of the break in the football season and will be looking to pull a surprise in this division.

Tee times for the event will be as follows:
