Gymnasts Win 12 Medals, Including First Golds

February 9, 2014

[Updated] For the first time in the six years that Bermuda gymnasts have attended the Chicago Style Invitational — which attracts over 4,000 gymnasts – Bermuda has won gold, capturing two golds as part of their twelve medal haul.

The Chicago meet features gymnasts from the top clubs all over the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Guatemala; and 16 year old Warwick Academy student Gabby Vincent won gold medals on both the vault and bars in the 16 yrs+ Level 9 competition.

Along with Vincent, the 9-strong squad had its most successful outing ever at the Chicago meet, with 12 medals won and many gymnasts debuting new, international level skills.

“The results are truly a reflection of the progress of our program. There were over 4,000 gymnasts at this competition, the most ever, and our gymnasts were right in the running”, said Bermuda’s Head Gymnastics Coach Duke Nelligan.

“We have used Island Games as a stepping stone to raise our training commitment and reach a higher level of skill. This is the first sign that we are on track with our preparations for Junior Pan Ams and Commonwealth Games.

In the level 9 meet, medals were also won by Tabytha Hofheins [vault, bars, beam], Danielle Wall [vault, floor], Sydney Mason [vault], and Clara James [vault].

In addition to her vault and bars golds, Vincent also medaled in the all-around. Zantae Dill and Anna Francoeur also had strong showings in the level 9 round but finished just out of the medals.

The Level 7 competitors Ava Marshall and Gianna Webbe both earned medals on the uneven bars, finishing 15th and 7th place in their respective age groups.

Update 6.39pm: Shadow Minister for Community, Cultural Development and Sport Michael Weeks said, “The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party today commends Bermuda’s gymnasts participating in the Chicago Style Invitational for their impressive performance. Two Gold medals and a total haul of 12 medals in this competition is great work by our athletes and good news for Bermuda!

“Two time Gold medalist Gabby Vincent and her teammates have done an outstanding job. We join with Bermudians from around the world as we salute their discipline, dedication and their competitive spirit as they represent us on the world stage.”
