Man Stole Cheques From Deceased Person
A 41 year old man appeared in Magistrates Court this morning [Feb 27] where he admitted trespassing in the house of a man who had recently died and stealing a Bank of Butterfield chequebook.
Lerone Ming, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to over a dozen charges involving burglary, cheque theft, and then using stolen cheques to fraudulently obtain over $3,oo0 in cash from the Bank of Butterfield.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo set sentencing for April, ordered a Social Inquiry Report, and remanded Ming into custody until his sentencing date.
Prosecutor Susan Mulligan told the Magistrate that between December 2013 and January 2014, Ming had trespassed in the house of a man who had recently died and stolen a Bank of Butterfield chequebook valued at $20.
Between January and February 2014, Ming wrote multiple cheques for over $1,000 each and deposited these cheques. He then later withdrew and sought to withdraw cash.
Butterfield Bank personnel were alerted to the unusual activity in the deceased man’s account and Ming was caught, in February, in the act of attempting to withdraw cash from an ATM at the Bank’s Rosebank centre.
Police were called and Ming was soon arrested and questioned. Ming admitted to Police that he had committed the offences.
