Photos: Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Repairs Underway
Restoration work is underway at the Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse in Southampton, with scaffolding visible on the 117ft high structure.
The Government previously announced that Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse will be closed to the public until April 7th 2014 while the restoration work takes place. The cost was not stated, but back in 2012 the then-Government said the repairs would cost $500,000.
Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse was built in 1844, and began operation on May 1, 1846. The structure itself measures 117 feet from base to light, and its beam of light runs 362 feet above sea level, and ships 40 miles away can see it. To climb to the top of the lighthouse, one must take eight flights, or a total of 185 steps.

$500k+ in repairs while regular maintenance, likely would’ve been a whole lot less!
This is always the case.
Isn’t it a requirement that all workmen on staging use safety belts, especially when at very high heights?
Great to see the repairs are being done the right way with proper staging. This has been needed for sometime.
Can any one e-mail us a a couple of high resolution photos to use in Lighthouse Digest to show the restoration work? We would give the proper photo credits.
