This past weekend saw three women’s B league and one women’s A league hockey matches played, with three wins and one draws on the final score sheet.
Wildcats vs Bluebirds [Mar 22] – Final Score: 3-2
A very intense game between these teams fighting to get on the scoreboard as Wildcats were the winners in a previous match against Bluebirds. Bluebirds’ Andrea Cann who would score first on a breakaway and with it being just her and the Wildcats’ ‘keeper’ executed a fine field goal shot into the empty goal in the 11th minute and the half ended 1-0 to Bluebirds.
Three minutes into the second half saw the ball coming out of the left side by Bluebirds’ defender Kaywell Outerbridge to her teammate Deb Sagus with a long hit still on the left to find Cann again on the run who collected the ball and her crack into the circle deflected off a Wildcats’ defender’s stick went quite high over the Wildcats’ ‘keepers’ head and landed just inside the top right post for her second field goal with the delight of all who were present and now Bluebirds were up 2-0.
Wildcats’ Alecia Holder was seen running down the right side towards the ‘D’ and while drawing out two of the Bluebird defenders, pulled the ball slightly to the left and fired home a field goal into the
corner in the 48th minute and now the score was 2-1. A good ten minutes saw play in the Bluebirds 25 metre area, but with ‘keeper’ Vicki Johnston and her solid defense they were unsuccessful in increasing their lead.
A penalty corner was awarded to Bluebirds due to a foul in the circle and Kris Soares injected the ball to Jo-Ann Smith who took a shot from the top of the circle, but the rebound off the Wildcats’ ‘keepers’ pads was followed through by Kris Soares in the 66th minute and now Bluebirds had gone up 3-1. Bluebirds’ Kourtney Fassler drove a long pass to Jo-Smith who collected ball while running towards the Wildcats’ circle and what looked to be goal number three and another one on one situation, Smith fell on the ground just by the penalty spot to the hilarity of all who were present including her and the ‘keeper’. Two minutes later Wildcats’ Holder released a pass into the ‘D’ and Michele Ming got ahold of it by the penalty spot and drawing out the defense and ‘keeper’ found an unmarked Maria Pichery to the left post who smacked the ball in for their second field goal but this time Bluebirds came away the winners with a close score of 3-2.
Ravens vs Canaries [Mar 23] – Final Score: 2-0
A friendly atmosphere and a well matched game between these two teams. Raven’s first field goal came early off a pass by Megan Spurling to Mollie O’Donnell who scored into the right corner of the goal in the 3rd minute. Their second field goal came when Spurling dribbled the ball down the right side to find Aleisha Hollis on the left post who slapped the ball into the goal in the 64th minute. Both teams fought hard with great saves from both goalkeepers. Canaries had their opportunities to score, but were unlucky to put the ball away and the game ended with Ravens being the winners of 2-0.
Budgies vs Swallows [Mar 23] – Final Score: 5-5
The Budgies playing with 9 players and without a goalkeeper, and Swallows had just enough with a squad of 11. A foul in the circle awarded Budgies a penalty corner and Keishae Robinson fired home her shot from the top of the circle in the 3rd minute. Swallows’ Joanna Heaney scored a field goal four minutes later and now the game was a 1-1 tie. Taking advantage of Budgies not having a goalkeeper nor a ‘kicking back’, Swallows’ Liz Stewart dribbled the ball through the midfield using her skill and speed driving the ball into the circle putting away their second field goal in the 14th minute. Another solo run for Stewart’s second field goal in the 25th minute and seven minutes later to complete her hat-trick from field goals. One minute before half time Budgies were awarded their second penalty corner; injected by Tse Minors to Robinson would execute her clear shot firing home from the top of the circle which took the total of 4-2 goals to Swallows in the 34th minute.
Budgies decided to field a goalkeeper for the second half. Budgies’ Francesca Cacace scored a field goal in the 37th minute and now the score was 4-3. Swallows’ Stewart got her fourth field goal in the 45th minute and now the score was 5-3. Budgies’ Vanessa Paulos and Jaselle Smith got field goals in the 53rd and 57th minute respectively and the game ended in a 5-5 tie.
Longtails vs Bluebirds [Mar 23] – Final Score: 3-0
This was definitely a nice game with this young and fast team putting Bluebirds through their paces, but despite Longtails’ efforts Bluebirds were given a penalty corner which was injected by ‘speedy legs’ Lauren Patterson to Liz Twite at the top of the circle. The ball travelled through a defender and the conversion as a result of a rebound off the Longtails’ ‘keepers’ pads and Bluebirds went up
1 – 0 in the 9th minute. Bluebirds’ Nikki Murray-Mason would score their second goal after receiving a pass from Kourtney Fassler from just outside the ‘D’ who dribbled in and fired her shot into the goal in the 15th minute and the first half ended 2-0 to Bluebirds.
The second half continued with play mostly in the Longtails’ half and a text book penalty corner was converted by Bluebirds Lauren Patterson who injected the ball to Deb Sagus who slipped it back to Patterson and with a one touch sweep into the goal in the 37th minute for goal number 3 and her teammates celebrating with high ‘fives’ as that being a beaut. This greatly improved Longtails team continued with strategic play with their playmaker Maya Palacio feeding balls to her solid forward and midfield line, but they were no match for Bluebirds’ ‘keeper’ Vicki Johnston and her defensive team as Johnston saved numerous shots at goal. One potential goal was stopped on the line by Kourtney Fassler for a sweep out of bounds and as there were no more goals for the rest of the second half the score remained 3-0 in favour of Bluebirds.
