New Hospital To Feature 2,738 Sq Ft Atrium
The healing power of natural light played a major role in the architectural design of the new Acute Care Wing, the Bermuda Hospitals Board [BHB] said.
“Large windows are featured throughout the building and while that allows light into areas facing outdoors it doesn’t address areas in the middle of the new facility,” a spokesperson explained.
“Yet natural light pours as readily into these areas as those on the perimeter of the building. This is because a central atrium with skylights has been created in the middle of the facility.
“The atrium is 2,738 square feet on the second floor. It houses a waiting area, check-in desk and discharge lounge for surgical patients. The waiting area seats 18 people while the discharge lounge seats eight.”
“The design in this section of the building uplifts your spirit,” said BHB President and CEO Venetta Symonds.
“I’m sure members of the public will especially appreciate having this feeling in a hospital setting. The functionality of making it a waiting area speaks to the expertise of the architectural and design team of Paget Health Services.”
The spokesperson added, “Scientific studies have proven the importance of lighting levels on mood and emotion and more recently on the body’s circadian rhythms and in turn, its physiology. The Bermuda Hospitals Board is proud that the new Acute Care Wing provides both its staff and the public with healthy amounts of natural light.”
The new Acute Care Wing opens to the public this September.
How much did that cost us?
If only we had some sort of massive natural outdoor space where people could enjoy the healing power of light. Perhaps some sort of garden filled with plants… a healing botanical space. If only.

In-spite of the so called “healing powers of natural light” and the fact there is a garden near by or even a roof top garden could have been added to this new building the an atrium was selected
An atrium used in any place requiring space is absolutely ludicrous! Just imagine what could have been added to the new wing as oppose to wasted central (vacant space) from floor level to roof?

Why is Logis charging so much money for this internet tv, when u can stream most of these channels yourself. In another two years this will seem like a waste of money.
This is a very expensive capital project. The good Lord knows we could use that money to do other things. However, King Edward is pretty old and in some aspects, out dated.
Building a new hospital wing (it really feels like a new hospital however) is important. We’re all going to end up there in one form or another. We’ve all been moaning about the old hospital for YEARS but now we’re moaning about the new one. Having this new facility will hopefully bring standards up in BDA and also tell the world that we have this state of the art facility.
yes it’s expensive but yes, it’s very much needed.

Seriously……. This atrium space could have been used in the event we needed more rooms. smdh If it is going to cost so much to build future expansion should have been a factor. Not a cosmetic atrium

The main problem with our old hospital has often been the poor uncaring attitude and work ethic of many (not all – some are excellent – but a huge minority)of many of the hospital staff leading to incredibly poor service and a dirty broken down facility reflecting how little the staff and management really care about the patients. You can tell that most of the staff are just there to collect a pay check and talk with the friends all day. If you put the same old staff in a new bright hospital (which only has 90 private rooms at a cost of $4,000,000.00/room for International Company staff as they are the only ones who medical insurance covers private rooms) with an atrium you will end up with the same result – a run down, dirty facility full of employees who don’t give a damn about anybody except themselves. Further, due to the huge drop in our resident population this new hospital is no longer needed and we no longer have the tax base to support the massive cost to run it. Thanks PLP – you really F^*ked up once again with your hopeless management of our economy..
This is a nice touch need some indoor plants like at festival bay in Orlando fl. Fishtail palms…….however…what we need is some politicians with some backbone,to legislate insurance and medical % profit allowance …to world,(reasonable),standards.At present there jacked up to reflect the coat ratio of people making over 250,000 a year.These two entities are setting their own pricing at a level unatainable to the common man woman and child in Bermuda……at 1600 a month for a months insurance (not even close to comprehensive insurance…),and 900 dollars for a doctors visit…..it is unreasonable to expect CONSTITUENTS to be able to pay it….and are NOT reflective of their requirements of which we wish our representatives to allow or condone!Proper pricing please….compare prices to overseas insurance and or medicine for the same product…..I just wish US….and or England….or Europe could offer an insurance product for overseas treatment…..at a reasonable cost…with coverage that didn’t avoid value for dollar!Our product is so unreasonably priced it is for the most part unatainable.What of Mutualof Omaha,Loydes of London….do they have an international product?
