Extensive Searches Fail To Locate Missing Visitor

May 11, 2014

Despite an extensive island-wide search over the weekend which included the Police, Bermuda Regiment, Marine Police, Regimental Boat Troop, Junior Leaders, as well as volunteer divers and members of the community, Canadian visitor William Grange has still not been located.

Mr. Grange — who suffers from short term memory loss — arrived in Bermuda from Napanee, Canada earlier this month and has not been seen since approximately 10.00pm on the evening of May 2.

The 67 year old came for a 10-day vacation with his wife, and was staying at the Cambridge Beaches Resort in Sandys. His son John Grange said that the family thinks his father may have went for a walk and become confused, and kept on walking.

Detective Inspector Mark Clarke said, “Island-wide search efforts resumed at 8am Saturday, May 10th for missing 67 year old Canadian visitor Mr. William ‘Bill’ Grange and continued through Sunday, May 11th.

“Members of the Grange family were an integral part of the ongoing search efforts for their loved one, who suffers from short term memory loss and was last seen around 10pm Friday, May 2nd at his vacation accommodation, Cambridge Beaches Resort in Sandys parish.

Mr. Grange’s son John Grange speaks at a press conference earlier this week:

“He is further described as a Caucasian male, 5’9″ tall with white hair and by now likely some beard growth, wearing beige pants, a blue shirt, brown jacket and brown shoes.

“Over the weekend extensive land and marine searches were conducted by volunteers including members of the public, Bermuda Regiment plus Junior Leaders, as well as police officers in the western, central and eastern parishes.

  • Western parishes: various land areas including Railway Trails, directed searches of Fort Scaur, Parapet property, Boaz Island.
  • Marines searches by Marine Police, Regimental Boat Troop and volunteer divers in the western area.
  • Eastern parishes: various land areas including shorelines in the Ferry Reach and eastern area.
  • Central parishes: various land areas and shorelines in the central area.

“In addition, two area ponds were searched in Sandys parish and volunteers from the boating community conducted a shoreline search of the Dockyard area, including an exploration of the reef line up to one mile offshore, without success.

Bermuda Aerial Media joins the search earlier this week:

“During the land searches area residents throughout the island were also spoken to, with many of them indicating they were aware that ‘Bill’ Grange was missing and had checked their own properties for the 67 year old Canadian visitor, to no avail.

“On behalf of the Bermuda Police Service I wish to thank everyone who took time out of their weekend to search for ‘Bill’ Grange and continue to appeal for anyone who may have seen or who may have any information on the whereabouts of the missing 67 year old Canadian visitor to contact the main police telephone number 295-0011 immediately, reporting all relevant information,” added Detective Inspector Clarke.

In addition to the extensive efforts by Police and wide community support over this past week, a “Find William Grange” Facebook page was launched on May 8th, which includes an interactive search map being updated by members of the page.

    • Sally jones says:

There was heavy rain on the Sunday after he went missing.all smell traces from hotel would be lost by now.

  4. Timothy Hickey says:

I realize this man suffers from “Short Term” memory loss, but can you PLEASE explain to me exactly how a visitor, on an Island 22 miles long and 3 miles wide goes missing for almost one week and NO ONE has seen him?

    • Fruity says:

There are actually plenty of nooks on this small island, that you can stumble into or fall by accident. If unconscious that just makes it worse. But its quite possible..

      • Annie says:

That’s my fear: that he has fallen and is trapped somewhere. He has to eat and drink. He has to sleep. He has to use the bathroom-we all do. Where is he doing these things? Poor, poor man. This is so troubling.

    • Sick n Tired says:

Please explain why his wife would allow her husband with “SHORT TERM” memory to go out for a walk by himself at 10pm knowing he has short term memory.

Better yet, where is his wife? We have all seen his son, but not once have we seen his wife nor have we heard from her!!!!

Something just not sitting right here!!!!!

  5. Marthoga says:

MH370 in Malaysia, School girls in Nigeria, William Grange in Bermuda. Dear God, please find all these missing people and bring them home safe to their families.

  6. Nigel Spider says:

Someone made the statement and asked “this guy was a top notch lawyer when he was practicing. Is it possible he faked his own death and has someone working with him? Ever seen forensic files???? Hmmm!!!”

    • Annie says:

It’s possible but how would he benefit? He can’t start a new life here as easily as you would somewhere else larger and with a bigger population-he can’t just blend in. I’d think if someone was to try something like this they’d do it in a place like Mexico or somewhere in Central or South America. It would be stupid to try it here as he’d be stuck-he wouldn’t be able to cross borders into other countries like he could in other places and he can’t anonymously rent or buy property…it just wouldn’t make sense to try that here. It would make more sense to try it back home in Canada than it would here.

      • Sally jones says:

Not fake own death but maybe do oneself in for insurance purposes.

  7. 1minute says:

I am guessing that Willowbank has been searched. A closed hotel with lots of places to hide.

  8. X man says:

Were got a real mystery here !
As long as it is been – still hope the Visitor is Ok – and for many reasons.
I have been scouting in and out of the Rocks and Shore line in the St.Davids area looking for Fry [bait] and I havnt seen nothing.

  9. Onion says:

If he hasn’t been found by now he must have gone in the water.

    Sad.

    • Justice! says:

      Onion,

I’ve said the same thing. Alternatively, someone may be engaging him with his consent, and all is well with him.

  10. Justice! says:

When will this search be declared officially over? When Hell freezes over? It is funny how certain people receive more attention and sympathy than others.

  11. Nigel Spider says:

Talk about faking your own death.

  12. Jahma Gibbons says:

It seems very strange that just a few weeks ago we denied those Canadian journalists here for the doc on the Middleton case and now a Canadian comes here on vacation and just goes missing!Do I smell something strange or what!!

  13. lifeblood says:

I don’t understand…Mr. Grange’s son, John was quick to offer the explanation that his father may have gone for a walk and become confused. It appears that the family knows he suffers from short term memory loss, which perhaps has caused similar scenarios in the past; so why let him go for a walk in a foreign land after 10 at night by himself?

    • Tough Love says:

Exactly. I don’t understand why his wife didn’t insist on going with him. Something isn’t right at all.
