Kawaley Appointed Temporary Acting Governor
Government House has revealed that Chief Justice Ian Kawaley will fill in as Acting Governor from Thursday, May 8 through Friday, May 9, 2014, with both the Governor and Deputy Governor to be away during that period.
A spokesperson said, “Government House has announced that Mr. Ian Kawaley, the Chief Justice, will take on the role of Acting Governor from Thursday, May to Friday, May 9.
“Both the Governor and Deputy Governor will be away at that time, respectively, visiting the Bermuda Regiment at its overseas camp in Ontario and at a meeting in Miami on hurricane and disaster management.
The formal terms of the Government House announcement were:
“After consultation with the Premier and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, and in conformance with Section 19(1)(b) of the Constitution, Her Majesty has instructed the Secretary of State to designate Chief Justice Ian Kawaley to act in the office of Governor and to perform the functions of that office accordingly during this period. The Chief Justice took the relevant Oath on Wednesday, 7 May.”
WOW a hole day to be acting Govenor how much can happen in 24 hours?
Bermuda should have a Bermudian as Governor anyway. Why are we so set in this Colonial mind and thinking. Sticking to this old supremacy thinking is killing Bermuda. Some do not want to move forward, as they do not want to upset the Status Quo. I hope Bermuda grows up soon, and not when it is too late.
Congratulations Chief Justice !!!
Sorry Betty, it’s only killing people who think like you.
There’s actually somnething to take from this particular post of BT’s.
“Some do not want to move forward.” True.
“I hope Bermuda grows up soon.” True.
I’m learning alot from the opposition about using/not using context.
Independence is the answer if your looking for one @ Betty Trump
Whether or not it is an answer depends on the question.
The plumber is not going to win the High Schools Spelling Bee, do you mean a whole day? Actually, a whole lot can happen in a whole day in Bermuda these days. Great choice, Chief Justice Kawaley!
on this rock, ALOT. the end. hahahah
Support Betty on this one. Congratulations to Chief Justice Ian Kawaley. I believe he would make an excellent Governor one day. By the way, try telling the people of Australia that their Governor General is not Australian. Bermuda is stuck in a colonial mentality, and we do need to trust in our own.
Why on earth would you compare Bermuda to Australia to try and make a point? Not relevant to any thinking person.
Mind you, after sitting and listening to CURB presentations where terribly outdated facts/figures are used/skewed/extrapolated by a trained statistician to develop hypothesese and subsequent plans for improvement this post doesn’t surprise me.
As one poster on here frequently says “Do better.”
I favour a Bermudian Governor General, but not as a means to an end, like some.

Ok folks, the Governor(head of state) represents the crown in dependent territories/colonies. A Governor-General (ceremonial function) represents the crown in an independent country that is a part of the British Commonwealth e.g. Canada, Barbados, Jamaica et al.
Bermuda can only have a Governor-General if it becomes independent and remains a member of the British Commonwealth. Commonwealth citizens do have rights! Folks have been seriously mis-educated about independence here in Bermuda. Independence does not mean a total severing of ties from GB, however, I do not think Bermuda is ready for independence. There needs to be a balanced education campaign about dependency/colonization and independence/sovereignty.
