Youth Olympics: Scraders, Perinchief Confirmed
BNNA President Donna Watson said, “As you may or may not be aware the Carifta Games that were held in Martinique April 19th – 21st served as one of the qualifiers for the Youth Olympic Games for the Americas region. The age of the athletes are 16 and 17 years old.
“The qualifier at Carifta served as the qualifier for the Caribbean countries Antigua and Barbuda Jamaica,Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis, Belize, St. Lucia, Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Martinique, Guyana ,Montserrat, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago
“There was also a qualifier held in Miramar, Florida April 4th – 5th. The two-day selection trials will feature approximately 150 athletes from Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and the U.S.

“There was a further qualifier held in Colombia May 18th – 19th consisting of the South America countries Argentina, Panama, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazi, Peru, Chile, Uruguay,Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador.
“From these 3 qualifiers athletes are selected based on their top distances and times. The criteria for the Youth Olympics states there are a certain number of athletes from each region that can qualify for each event. Based on the number the top athletes are chosen.
“I am pleased to announce that Jah-Nhai Perinchief has been selected for the team with a tie for the highest leap in the Boys High Jump with 4 boys being selected in this event. Faheemah “Kryah” Scraders has been selected for the team with the fastest time for the Girls 800m with only 3 athletes being selected in this event.
“This is fantastic for Bermuda with our small team of 13 athletes and qualifying 2 athletes for this prestigious event and for them to represent the America’s region. We are proud of their coaches Rohaan Simons[High Jump] and Jarita Vickers[middle distance].
“These Games will take place in Nanjing, China August 16th – 28th. The Americas will compete against the following region Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania.”
