Bermuda Women’s 7′s Rugby Team Announced
The Bermuda Women’s National 7s Team for the upcoming match at the National Sports Center on Saturday June 7th at 6pm has been announced.
The team have already begun entering major internationally recognized tournaments. In November 2012 the Women traveled to the New York 7s tournament, the largest rugby event on the east coast. They proceeded to win the Plate Final in their first tournament as a team.
In February of 2013 the Bermuda Women’s team traveled across the US to compete in the highly prestigious Las Vegas Invitational 7s Tournament. Their first tournament officially representing Bermuda and despite strong opposition, the team went on to win the Shield Final in only their second tournament since their formation. With a huge Olympic incentive, the aim is to develop this Women’s side so that they become a regular competing force on the international circuit.
Recently, the National Team attended the North America and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Women’s 7s Tournament which was held in the Cayman Islands last November. Competition was fierce as the event served as the regional qualifying competition for the IRB Women’s 7s World Series, the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games. Notable wins included a 12-0 shut-out of Jamaica in the Pool stages and a thrilling come-back against Turks & Caicos in the Plate Semi-Final.
Bermuda Women’s 7’s National Squad includes: Kelli Nusum, Anthi Xipolia, Karly Alleyne, Mika Tomita, Erica McArthur, Jillian Smith, Deneka Borden, Aleisha James, Amanda Swan, Gemma Godfrey, Jo Godfrey and Gillian Cross.
