International Media Report On Bean’s Ganja Tea

June 4, 2014

[Updated] Some of the international media have picked up Opposition Leader Marc Bean’s recent comments about giving “ganja tea” to his daughter when she was a toddler, with the story picked up by at least three outlets thus far.

Both the Latin American Herald Tribune’s article and Fox News Latino’s article is called “Bermuda opposition chief sings praises of cannabis tea“, while the Jamaica Observer is carrying an article entitledOpposition leader says he ‘cured’ daughter’s asthma with ganja tea“.

Speaking in the House of Assembly this past Friday, Mr. Bean said he has seen the benefits of medicinal use of cannabis first hand with both his father and daughter.

Excerpt of Mr Bean speaking in the House on Friday

Mr. Bean said, “When my daughter was three years old, because of the circumstances I didn’t have much opportunity to spend time with her up until she reached about two-and-a-half, three, but I always was told she suffers from asthma. Severely.

“The first opportunity I had my daughter — who is now going 20 years old — the first opportunity I had her in my care and custody, I went and made her a big cup of ganja tea. At two-and-a-half….three years old.

“Now some of you might be saying that’s irresponsible as a parent, but you can go ask her mother and her family on her mother’s side today. Since that day she has never, ever suffered from asthma. Since that one day, that one cup of cannabis tea. So you can’t tell me the medicinal use of it.”

Mr Bean has come under fire for his actions, with pediatrician Dr Peter Perinchief telling the Bermuda Sun he was in “stunned disbelief,” and thinks it’s “unconscionable” for a parent to give something like this to their three-year-old child, while child advocate Sheelagh Cooper told The Royal Gazette she was “appalled” that he would give something like that to a young child, and it left her “virtually speechless.”

Update 12.58pm: Liz Boden — founder of Open Airways — expressed extreme concern over Mr Bean’s comments, saying that “there are no evidence based studies demonstrating that there is a cure for asthma.

Ms. Boden added, “Asthma can be controlled by avoiding triggers and taking preventative medication as prescribed by a doctor. Open Airways strongly urges people to consult their doctor before trying any alternative remedies and certainly before giving up prescribed medication. Asthma can be life threatening if not correctly treated.

“Asthma is a long term variable disease, which may come and go throughout a life time. As many as 50% of pre school children cough and wheeze whenever they have a cold. Many of these children may not have asthma but simply have tiny underdeveloped airways at a young age.”

Legalize the ganja for the people

    • Black Soil says:

I guess we should all address Marc as Dr. Bean.

    • STANDING STRONG BDA says:

This is nothing more than a “Political Strategy by the OBAubp” to twist the situation and deflect from the real issues here in Bermuda. The real debate is in regards to the “CRC” report and the findings of the investigation of “JETGATE” as well as how the UBPoba are using the “24 MILLION dollars” with the “Tourism Authority. These are the answers Bermuda must focus on and demand from the government. Not a story which is more than 17 years old.

I understand the need for the UBPoba to deflect from the Real issues up for debate, as they are seeking a way to restore their creditability to the public, by attempting to take an attack on Mr. Bean.

Mr. Bean did what was often common practice almost 17 years ago. Many parents have often done it, and it is still practice in some parts of the world today. Especially in the Caribbean Islands where are brothers and sisters often do not believe in the use of Pharmaceutical drugs. Often years ago many families often resorted to home made natural herbs as a natural cure for their children. Seldom did they use Pharmaceutical drugs which are often more harmful and dangerous to children, than any natural herb.

The Pharmaceutical companies are often seeking big profits and fight again the use of natural herbs to keep their companies making huge profits. However, today many folks have move away from using natural herbs as the big corporations have pushed their drugs forward, while a few folks still believe in the natural herbs. But to suggest this is such a big fan fare after 17 years later is taking it a bit too far. This is clearly merely as a political attack, to remove folks away from the JETGATE MESS of the UBPOba. The UBPoba fans are getting a kick out of nothing, yet failing to address the real issues at stake here.

Many folks today give their children far more dangerous drugs. Take the time to Read carefully the side effects and possible dangers of Pharmaceutical drugs, I think one owould perhaps think twice. But because a doctor says it okay, most folks readily agree, and fail to read the fine print carefully. Slowly it begins to have its long-term impact, which is often not good.

Will this hurt Mr. Bean politically. NO because many like and appreciate him for his FRANKNESS AND MORE SO HONESTLY. He did not lie, he spoke in a honest fashion and shared a personal story that took place more than over 17 years ago. This level of Honesty is lacking from most of the members of the Government.

Do many agree with his choice over 17 years ago…well some do….well others do not, but it does not shift their feelings towards him, nor do they believe it requires he resign. After all we all lmake decisons in our younger years, that we can reflect back on and say “what was I thinking”. We have all found ourselves in such a position at some time in our lives. He has NOT done any damage to his party or self.

It is only damage as considered by the faithfulfollowers of the UBPOba. The UBPoba are barking up the wrong tree. The fans are out in full force today. He was at least willing to be HONEST, rather than dishonest, which we have seen over and over again from the UBPoba MPs. Actually, this has highlighted Mr. Bean position even more, particularly by the younger generation who lend him more support. SO it may have actually backfired on the UBPoba strategy moving forward. Get your dog off that tree, it the wrong one…..lol…

      • Navin Johnson says:

Nice try Standing Strong but this makes your JETGATE issue even more of a non event….leader of the opposition admits giving illegal drugs to a child the first time in his care….bigger fool than I thought possible and an embarrassment

        • Speak Truth says:

          Well said Standing Strong
We know that the Oba Fans are focusing on this issue only. Thus the dislike clicks. They are seeking political points, but the out come is Zero.

          • Hmmm says:

Political points…are you kidding. Bean is disgusting for doing this and bragging about it. He thinks he cured asthma, the guy is a joke.

            • Suzi says:

I have to agree with Standing Strong, he or she has made some real strong points. I know that since folks vote on here based upon party lines those votes merely reflect those folks whom are OBA. I love to see folks vote like based upon the issue.

It is sad where we as a people have our priority.

This issue is insignificant as it is more than over 17 years old. The more significant issues highlighted is where we need to put our focus and attention. Standing Strong is 100% correct. We should be seeking answers in regards to JETGATE, Bermuda Tourism Authority and CRC report. These issues must be addressed with right answers.

Keep speaking Standing Strong. You are on the right track and the truth often something a certain sector within Bermuda seldom like to hear.

            • young observer says:

              Look at the polls
              That speak volumes.

      • lucky 7 says:

I LOVE it! The more Mark Bean opens his mouth, he’s digging a big hole for himself and the PLP. Keep at it Mark, this is great!

        • Ringmaster says:

Anyone else see that the avatar for Standing Strong Bda (apart from it being used by Betty/Bettty/ and Concerned Citizen and the PLP generally), looks dopey?

          • Cleancut says:

Yes it’s Betty again, or YETTB I wonder how much they are paying her.

            • Hmmm says:

Multiple posters using the same computer and all done to trick voters into voting for the PLP. Quite disgusting really.

              • Cleancut says:

Yep,the same PLP diehard ladies that call the Sherri J show daily & hourly, looking to wind up Sherri J as well.A little click.

        • Loving Togetherness says:

I have been thinking this matter over carefully. I believe that it is becoming kinda of silly now and overplayed by the media and OBA supporters. It happen more than 17 years ago. Also, to be fair we must look at other MPs and where their children are today. One MP has a child who now is in prison for drugs, and others have children who use drugs. So why be so unfair to Mr. Bean. Mr. Moniz’s son also was charged for drug use. All drugs are illegal regardless of whom used them. How can we be so judgemental over one person vs another. Some MPs whom I supported from the OBA openly admitted using drugs. None of them indicated they still do not use today. So it leaves a lot of Questions Marks?

I must admit that I find myself having to go with @Standing Strong on this issue. To make political hay over something like this is not right, unless we hold all the MP accountable as well. It does come across as a political bias situation. Further more we have failed to address the issues that are more important here.

I hope that we do not allow ourselves to become trap into such silly issues. I also hope the media would raise the level and quality of reporting.

Since many vote along political lines in Bermuda, it is expected that such is the case in regards to this same issue.

      • Build a Better Bermuda says:

I commend Mr. Bean for his honesty, it took a lot to admit such an intimate matter to the public… though probably not as much as one might think, his own statement shows that his ego pronouncing how he cured asthma, an in curable disease. It is this ego that makes him unfit to lead this country. We are a country of laws, agree with them or not, they are our laws and as they times change, they to change. As his parties highest representative, it is his responsibility to up hold those laws and if he doesn’t agree with it, work to fix or change it, not set out an example that if we don’t agree with a law we just ignore it. Or further more, make a sole decision to involve a minor in criminal activity. Was it ego or an adled drugged brain that made him decide that at first chance of having his daughter in his custody, whom he admitted to having little to no relation with prior, little or no working knowledge of her condition, to introduce her to a large dose of psychotropic drug. This would not have been a modern medical variant, grown to enhance the medicinal and reduce the psychotropic natures, this would have been his ‘spiritual experience’ stash. The internet as we know it was not there for him to research recommendations. No, he believed he knew best, and thankfully the story worked out, it hasn’t always though, has it. Except he did not cure asthma, he didn’t even know if she had asthma, but to this date, in his own mind, he is a brilliant naturalist, who can do no wrong. And if we all followed his shining example, if one of my children were to injure themselves, maybe I should give them some heroin for the pain, it’s natural and I can always argue parallel to his own belief, that I don’t believe in the law against it and can just ignore it for others.
The fact of the matter is that all drugs out there, both natural and those that many like to call ‘chemical’ have side effects, have risks, have dangers, all require intelligent and informed use. Thus, today, the government is reviewing the legislation regarding the usage of cannabis. They are moving past the old bias, to examine it’s potential, for both good and bad. Whatever the legislation is, it will reflect their decision on the best path forward, and we can only decide how right we feel they are only once the legislation is produced. But they are intent on walking us forward with it, unlike Mr Bean who feels we should just go ahead and try and fly without first building the plane. I hope that whatever the laws maybe, they will provide for proper and proven medical use to those it can help, and eliminates the harsh legal consequences it has on those who are selfless in their use of it.
Bermuda is under better leadership, having those at the helm making the choices to ensure that the actions taken are for the improvement and betterment to society as a whole, and not for those who just want to get high legally.
Through my own experience, I have found the best way to deal with life is sober, anything that inhibits that sobriety doesn’t take away your issues or make them easier to deal with, they will always be there afterwards. These things are but distractions, fun distractions, but in the end, reality is still there and you are still in it… and Mr. Bean still feels he, or anyone that agrees with his opinions, doesn’t have to answer to the law, but everyone else does. I really wish that the PLP actually believed in what it tries to sell and could put someone like Mr. Butler in charge. At least everyone on the island could agree that he genuinely cares about this country, it’s people/society/community and it’s multitude of culture as a whole. A ever increasing rarity in their camp, which means he would just become a surrogate for those like Mr. Bean working behind the scene to promote their own agendas.

Mr. Butler, you would genuinely have a better chance in the OBA.

    • spilt milk says:

I agree! Now with MP Mark Bean.. as a parent when you see your child suffering and nothing seems to work you are willing to try anything to stop them from suffering. Maybe he did it out of desperation. Have you even seen somebody suffering from asthma or a seizure it makes you feel helpless or wish you can take on the pain that child is going through. As a modern scociety i think we should have some understanding on has tramatic incidents effect us and that was his lets say “ill do anything for my child “moment.. in saying that he shoulda kept that incident to himself and been less personal. He should have said i know of an incident where… this should be a prime example outlingning the importance of regulation! The dosage level, cannabinoid content could have been analized and the phycoactive thc could have been removed at a lab. The we could have said x amount worked or didnt work or showed moderate relief.. without regulation we will never have that science to back the claim and help the next asthma sufferer.

      • Hmmm says:

WOW, so 331 people think it is OK to give a 2-3year old ganja tea.

I wonder how many of that 331 people actually gave their 2-3 year old ganga tea.

If you did and stand by that, then reply to this message and put your name and address here to prove your genuine.

        • You Are Uneducated says:

You do realize that Ganja tea is no more harmful than English Breakfast right?

It’s packed with antioxidants, and contains no active chemical ingredients.

Do some research before trying to loo smart.

          • Hmmm says:

        • Ignorance is bliss says:

Shut up people.. I am so sick of the ramblings some of these folk who are so against it are probably the same people who drink, smoke use pain killers and have no problem with with pumping prescription chemicals into their loved ones let alone children…. Cough syrup I could go on… I am so sck of this dumbed down society. The art of herbal remidies is slowly being lost!! Why becuse you dingbats would rather buy into the “pharma’s” make money get rich methods and not look into less exspensive “farmers” or free plant herbal solutions. Silly people! And to answer your question I have not personally tried ganja tea but I would in a heart beat if it helps with a cure……

    • Whistling Frog says:

I can relate to Marc Bean using ganja herbs. I too have been cooking and drink ganja for many years now. My father who is in my care can also testify of his good night sleeps which he always mentions.

What amazes me is how people who have never ever in their life used read or heard about the history of the ganja herb, continue to bash it, even those in the church who read about it in their bibles still deny its powers. When cooked with it smells like any other herb used in the kitchen. Its one of the many herbs that came from Africa during the slave trade to the West in the hands of its people. But certain people are afraid of its powers to cure and heal a nation.
How naive of any country to deny a plant that can help its people in many ways by means of its economical and health benefits? oil, food, hay, paper, clothing and many other biodegradable products just to name a few. This plant is gold to any poor person who is willing to stay healthy in these economic times…

  2. Unbelievable says:

Whether or not this was a good idea on Marc Bean’s part is debatable. I wouldn’t do it if I had a child and I don’t smoke marijuana. I believe legalisation or decriminalisation is inevitable however.

What concerns me the most is that Marc Bean is a bit of a loose cannon. There’s all this bravado and machismo. All this “I don’t really care what anyone thinks” attitude. I’ve yet to see any kind of sensitivity or nuance to his speeches that display a sense of caring about anyone else except him or his party.

    • Black Soil says:

Dr. Bean is very proud of his bigotry and ignorance!! Clearly he thinks his followers identify with that. He is an insult.

    • Cleancut says:

Can you imagine Marc Bean being Premier and representing Bermuda on the world stage, OMG!

  3. Family Man says:

No matter how hard you try, you really can’t underestimate the intelligence of some people.

And they want to lead the country.

  4. serengeti says:

Bean is obviously finished politically. He has no choice but to resign.

    • SJ says:

I agree, he needs to step down. As a politician, he is a law makers, how on earth can we expect him to continue to be a politician when he already admitted he will not follow the laws the he and others elected officials make? Or is it a case of one set of laws for them to follow and another set for the rest of us???

      • iResign says:

How many law makers break the law by driving over 35K? How many law makers have breached paying taxes or failing to disclose interests in businesses? The reality is not everyone walks the same path. Being gay used to be a crime, now we have seen the light. So was being black. Pretty soon, ganja will be seen differently too. Marc Bean has been honest and real. That is better than so many other MPs and Ministers on either side of the House with fake stories of what they used to do or who they used to be. It’s joke business. If Marc should be banished for ganja 17 years ago Shawn must bounce for stealing heroin.

        • serengeti says:

He supplied illegal drugs to a baby.

          • iResign says:

illegal drugs versus legal drugs = drugs. I would rather deal with cannabis leaves than chemicals

            • serengeti says:

The baby didn’t have a choice. The adult who was supposed to be caring for her, gave her illegal drugs.

            • Bdablack says:

You would rather deal with chemicals. the next time you go to the dentist, tell him you don’t want Novocain to deaden the pain. Tell the anesthetist, you’ll smoke some herb before he does a procedure when you need it. Those antibiotics, don’t ever take any. Diabetics take some herb to make life livable don’t take insulin or any other oral medication for it.
You would rather take herb, as your drug of choice for getting high, but let you be in need of those chemicals you’ll e the first person to eat your words.

              • There are different herbs for different diseases , stop referring to ganja for every ailment!! Do some research please

              • Anbu says:

Hey jack@$$ u know herb actually lowers bloodsugar levels right? If i could smoke a joint to lessen the amout of injections i do a day then bring it on. I smoke to help control my bloodsugars. If it was legal i could use it in other ways besides smoking it. So yes id rather take weed than insulin.

              • JustAskin2 says:

Just where do you think the chemical companies get the derivatives to make their pharmaceutical drugs. From natural herbs!

              • JustAskin2 says:

Just where do you think the chemical companies get the derivatives to make their pharmaceutical drugs. From natural herbs! ‘Course they add other things which are not so natural and then you have a pill which has side effects like dizziness, nausea, heart palpitations, possibility of stroke, death.

There are no ‘drugs’ or active chemicals in the tea.

        • K Art says:

Are you for real? Marc Bean took a substance and gave it to a 2 1/2 year old infant! That is the problem! Nobody has a problem with what he gave to his father or what he took himself! We are outraged that a man who calls himself a leader would think it was a good idea to give it to a child that he admitted having in his care for the first time! Do we (he) even know that she definitely had asthma? I was mis-diagnosed as a child twenty years ago. I had a severe allergy that caused similar breathing issues. Furthermore, my son had what was believed to be asthma by the age of four and all we did was avoid certain foods as recommended by health care professionals! Remember this took place 17 years ago, there was no internet to do research like there is today. The effects were unknown and for the most part , that is still the case.
I could care less if Marc smoked, drank it, ate it, or if he gave it to his father! But if you don’t see a problem with giving it to an infant that has a developing brain – chances are you never will. Most adults wouldn’t even think of giving a 2 1/2 year old coffee or regular tea because the effects are unknown? But he think Ganja Tea is okay!

The same 3 letters will recall any drug and offer huge amounts of money for people who have suffered and can receive compensation.. These 3 letters(fda) are rarely challenged for the harm they do and murders that have been committed because of DRUG overdosage, wrong drugs given, side affects and not to mention although everyone is paying into the system, are not guaranteed proper treatment,. In the meantime there are varieties of HERBs that actually cure but are not allowed because the real drug pushers would lose out on business..the real drug pushers dress better and have a nice office or facility and offer huge smiles as they apply death by a thousand cuts! These inequalities that are based on who has the most money have been the ruin of nations, and we need to seek truth rather than appeasement.

Marc Bean needs to resign immediately. We demand answers to Gangagate

    • JustAskin2 says:

      I doubt that very much.

    • JustAskin2 says:

      Obviously? Well, we’ll see…

      • STANDING STRONG BDA says:

OBAubp barking up the wrong tree…search hard for something to get on BEAN, after he exposed JETGATE, DentalGAte, and TOURISM AUTHORITY GATE.

Mr. BEAN is a brilliant young politician…this is someone whom they fear. They will try anything to remove him, even go as far as set up. They did it to their former Premier…can not expect much from them…the political game is getting dirty now…..Mr. Dunkley has not reveal anything of great intelligent in the house, he is great at the “Deflection Dance of Politics.” Both his closing remarks were weak and empty of anything worth listening too…seems like Craig all over again..

        • JustAskin2 says:

The difference is though (at least for me) that we knew this about Dunkley all along. We’ve had years of his remarks and actions both as UBP and now OBA. This is no surprise. And this is a man of many years’ experience. Cannonier was relatively new at the game.

        • BNL says:

You are a joke! How is this an attack on the OBA. Marc exposed HIMSELF!

        • Navin Johnson says:

Standing Strong/Betty/Yettb your Avatar looks like you may have just sipped some Ganjatea…not many people will be using the terms Brilliant and Young to describe Mr Bean…politician maybe but brilliant and young?

        • JustAskin2 says:

You know, this kind of reminds me of the old stories that I read and heard during the UBP tenure. Disagree with the UBP or speak out against them and suddenly your bank loans are called in, people stop doing businesss with you, etc. Sounds like the lynch mob is in full force again…

  5. js says:

you may not always like what Bean has to say but at least he is honest to a fault

    • Hmmm says:

Spring Benny , Spice, gambling. What about the Hansard record showing that he was in favour of doing away with the referendum.

      “Bring it”

Honest to a fault …yeah right, really.

      • Ringmaster says:

So because he is “honest to a fault” he is a good guy? The issues here are not a simple “he gave his daughter a cup of cannabis tea 17 years ago” and that was it. He has stated he gave his father the same type of tea in 2010 to cure insomnia. Marc Bean is a genius – he can cure asthma and insomnia with one cup of cannabis tea. The guy would be a billionaire if it was that simple. I hope that Archibald Warner will read and take note so when the next person up before him on cannabis possession says he bought it to make tea, Mr. Warner sympathizes and says never mind the law I understand your compassion and dismiss the charges. Never happen. Yet “honest Marc” makes it seem so simple. As a Rasta, does he himself still partake of this miracle natural substance, and is it local or imported?

        • STANDING STRONG BDA says:

Ringmaster, did you give a child any of those dangerous Pharmaceutical drugs that the doctor said would cure them or make they feel better. Well if so you and 100s of others did the same thing Bean did, only thing is his tea was less harmful on the human organs, while the Pharmaceutical drugs are found to have more serious reaching side effects and long-term outcomes. So do not get so holly and howww…. the reality is Pharmaceutical drugs are even more dangerous and serious on children..yet many continue to use them praying all will be okay.

Honest stop with this political strategy you and the others are attempting to deflect from the wrong steps of the UBPOba. REALLY 17 years ago and your still trying to make a dead horse come back to life on a old age decision….REALLY Laughing….

          • Ringmaster says:

@ Standing Strong Bda aka person using Betty’s Avatar so we all know you are – the PLP.

Poor try to deflect from the REAL issue. Marc Bean has admitted he gave his father the same type of tea in 2010 so your attempt falls flat. He also admits he uses medical cannabis. Cannabis is illegal in Bermuda. Let me say it again. Cannabis is ILLEGAL. How many IB companies are there in Bermuda that are Pharmaceutical versus Cannabis? Do you really want them to pull out of Bermuda? They will if you keep on being anti Pharmaceutical, anti business. Think about it.

Hi world. Welcome to the rastaman’s banana republic where we allow members of parliament to publically break the law. Please invest your millions here, we’re not always this amateur, honest.

    • STANDING STRONG BDA says:

Yeah on both sides of the floor laws have been broken… guess you better get ready to move out everyone. Many confessed to the use of illegal drugs.. Many MPs shared their stories in the house of Parliament on Friday. Sounds like you did not hear the entire debate, or are selective in what you choose to talk about…really !! One or two MPs even had drugs in the house where their children had used it…so lets be balance in our discourse. ..it would be more effective.

  8. J Herald says:

Craig give a ride to a friend, lies about it and has to resign.

Marc gives an illegal drug to a child, brags about it and…..what…..?

    • flikel says:

There is a big difference here.
Craig’s issues where while he was in office.
Bean’s issues were 17 years ago, while he was far from being a politician.

Should everyone resign for acts committed decades ago…while not in political office?

      • Blaque says:

You know full well that people want something to complain about. I will state that I do NOT agree with the decisions of the Opposition Leader, however, he actions took place before he was in office and therefore have nothing to do with his political seat.

Many of our MPs had questionable actions in their youth I’m sure as well as the rest of the population of Bermuda… therefore he who is without sin… please cast the first stone.

OMG this country needs to learn how to move on! We will be hearing about this for the next decade. UGH

        • STANDING STRONG BDA says:

Thanks so much @Blaque,,, further more MPs from both sides of the floor shared their personal stories of illegal drug use. Many even talked about their friends and children using drugs. I think this is nothing more than political fan fare… attempting to score points..really…. Old story sharing of more than 17 years ago and OBAubp trying hard to bring air into a dead horse…who sings out…REALLY and dies again…laughing.

        • Liars says:

But it’s his open arrogance and spitefilled attitude that make me sick…..nothing else.

      • Hmmm says:

He effectively has endorsed the practice !!!!!!! HE HAS TO LEAVE AND LEAVE NOW… OBA will be happy to have him stay as they know the PLP will never win an election with Bean as the leader because of this.

        • STANDING STRONG BDA says:

The only person whom have done wrong in the house at present and still need to resign are the JETGATE 4, FAHY and Crockwell. Both Under the Westminster political system, what is euphemistically termed “misleading parliament” is usually considered a capital offence for those holding Cabinet-level positions.

This is a no go situation and dead in the water. Mr. Bean situation happen 17years ago, he was not an MP and some of the uBPoba MPs also took place a few years ago. I think you and others like you are barking up the wrong tree, to prevent dealing with JETGATE and other things of the UBPoba.

          • Chaos Theory says:

Hey Betty, see you changed you name; but your IP address is till the same. Nice to see you taking the “a good offence is better than a good defence” approach. I wish you and the party luck, but I think this one is going to hurt some.

            • Loving Togetherness says:

Well said Standing Strong, he is deflecting again. Guess that the only political strategy he knows. I think the Dead horse is still dead, it will not come back to life, but Mr. Bean will survive and the party. This is very scary for the OBA. Their latest political strategy is dead. Many young people have more respect for Bean now. I think the OBA know this, as I was on that side, but since Craig was treated so badly, I am not sure I will support them anymore.

      • serengeti says:

Bean is TODAY boasting about it and attempting to justify his illegal and reprehensible actions.

He should be investigated for the illegal and irresponsible things he now admits he did.

He does not have the judgment necessary to be Leader of the Opposition. He also has no moral authority at all when it comes to making or enforcing laws. Politically, he is finished.

      • Redo says:

He should resign solely for being stupid.

    • William says:

Craig takes a legal ride form a friend, is given money (not taken from public purse like 800mil) with the hope of making money for island….PLP destroy him

Bean gives illegal drug to child and is praised for his actions by some and experiences no legal repercussions….PLP cant be touched

      • .??? says:

Cannonier destroyed himself! No one held a gun to Craig’s head regarding any of the decisions he made, including his decision to resign! If Cannonier’s actions were above reproach then he should have stayed, fought and let the bright light of transparency in on the entire situation from start to finish!!! Jet gate had nothing to do with the PLP!

  11. flikel says:

Why should he resign and why the comparisons to the former Premier?

The former Premier resigned over his actions while currently in office.

Bean should not resign overs something he did 17 years ago.

Should all MPs, Senators and Cabinet Ministers resign over things they did decades ago…while not in office?

If this is the case, we will see a lot of resignations and the pool of potential politicians will be very thin.

    • JustAskin2 says:

LOL. If politicians should resign over things they did ever so long ago then the entire OBA would need to resign.

      • MisterMan311 says:

As would many of the Opposition MPs!

        • JustAskin2 says:

Exactly. One would want to leave well enough alone; you never know what bones will tumble out of which closets. Just my opinion…

    • team says:

      Exactly.

    • serengeti says:

He is right now, today, boasting about what he did and trying to defend his actions.

The Leader of the Opposition is telling us that he broke the law, and he has no remorse at all about it. In fact, he is encouraging others to do something similar.
He gave illegal drugs to a baby. It’s hard to imagine a more serious lack of judgment.

His political career is over. he has no choice but to resign.

      • Grizz says:

@Serengeti Can you tell me where he was encouraging others to do something similar

        • serengeti says:

That was the whole purpose of him telling the story, to make a claim that cannabis cured asthma in his 2 year old daughter. That is encouraging others to do the dame.

          • Ringmaster says:

Hey steady on there. What has Jennifer Smith or Louis Browne Evans got to do with this?

    • anon says:

But he brought it up in parliament NOW while he’s a member. Get it. Craig’s dealing were before he was elected but I guess that’s different because it’s the OBA?

      • Impressive says:

The difference is Craig lied repeatedly and did so while holding the office of Premier. Marc Bean told the truth about something he did years ago while not in office.. Big Difference.

For what its worth, I support MB, but I will say that he has chosen to play the game of politics and is bound by the characteristics of that game, i.e.. Sometimes you have to remember that you are representing a wide range of persons and your personal insights and beliefs as wise and insightful as they may be may effect others as a result of the office or position he holds.

At the end of the day, I applaud his honesty and transparency, but he should be wise enough to know that the media and current government would have used this as a tool to overcome their recent setbacks.. (When I say media, I refer to a certain print media, as they really deal in some subjective reporting on Parlaville Road next to the roundabout)

    • Billy Mays says:

He should resign because he still believes that what he did (giving illegal drugs to a child, treating a child’s medical condition with a substance that is/was both illegal and not indicated as a treatment for the child’s condition) was ok. What he did years ago was irresponsible; endorsing those actions today, that’s just stupid.

      • Impressive says:

oh please,, Do you want some more straws to grasp at?????

  12. Real says:

Didn’t this happen 18 years ago! Have a lot of people suffering lets get to some real issues!

  13. kat says:

To all you fools out there GOD don’t make drugs men do. Just because some white guy say’s its a drug don’t make it a drug. The same white guys that said blacks are nothing. Why do you even listen to the or follow the laws. They don’t respect any one else’s. Like I said your all a bunch of fools.

    • sonso says:

      hm..

    • serengeti says:

I can see you agree with Bean. He doesn’t think he has to follow the law either. He thinks it’s fine to break the law.

      • JustAskin2 says:

Oh please. How many of you break the law everyday by going over the speed limit, riding or driving while drunk or high, listening to music on your ipod while driving, etc., etc.

        • serengeti says:

Yeah, it’s commonplace to push drugs to toddlers. Everyone’s doing it.
Of course, in your little cess pit of a world.

    • .??? says:

As a black man who has experienced racism first hand, I find your statement about laws and not following them pretty ignorant. Don’t you know that there have been black men and women in parliament who have been apart of the legislative process for decades? Therefore, blacks have been intrinsic contributors in the development of the laws that we now have today. So are we to believe that these black people also believe that blacks are nothing and that they don’t respect anyone either? Also, since you seem to be an expert on what should be defined as a drug, please give us the list of what is and isn’t a drug. And stop insulting ppl of color from around the world as if they aren’t involved in the medical and pharmaceutical industries. Everyone developing and labeling chemicals and drugs is not white and we’ve had at least two black United States Surgeon Generals that have helped set US public health policies not to mention the black ministers of health that we have had here locally.

      • el says:

.???—–its about a mentality, — the design of controlled drugs has been forced upon us as opposed to us having the choice of what we take, whether blacks have been a part of this system or not is inconsequential to the fact that the system as it is has discriminated against the “black” man since 1600′s when a law was passed that “blacks” could not sell or profit from the sale of the tobacco crop. This law took place right here in Bermuda and permeated over to the Americas where “Jim Crow” law eventually came about. That’s right, it is recorded history of this fact of discrimination against “blacks” in Bermuda that are still present today. Just because “blacks” appear in positions formally held by whites does not mean they have the same powers of control or change .President Obama is a perfect example of that. The discrimination has yet to be corrected. what appears to be isn’t always what it is. The very fact that we are discussing freedom of an herb plant should be recognition enough that we are still in enslavement., lacking real God given choices because of a man made so call law.

    • lol says:

The guy that makes the drugs in my neighborhood is a black man not da white man :) He doesn’t seem to make much tea for respiratory issues though seems to make his stuff for people who want to focus better or want more energy lol

People make weed nowadays??? Money grows on trees and people can make trees?? wow,, Impressive to say the least.

  14. Hmmm says:

    The world is watching…

Is Bean going to do the right thing and resign or is he in it for Bean only.

    • JustAskin2 says:

That would not be the right thing. Remember freedom of speech?

      • serengeti says:

You’re free to make a speech confessing that you supplied illegal drugs to a small child, but no one can be immune from the consequences of that action.

Or does Marc think he’s above the law?
Is he “too important” for laws to apply to him?
Is he pulling the “don’t you know who I am” trick?

  15. Matt says:

Its his child!!! Why would he care what you or anyone else thinks about him or his child. The girl is alive and well! He should not care what anyone has to say.

    • What? says:

Just like all the other children that we give breezers to at 14 and 16, right? They are all now raving alcoholics that later become drug addicts. I know becuase I was one of them.

      • JustAskin2 says:

Come again? I remember my wonderful parents giving me and my siblings a small glass of Dubonet to celebrate Christmas at the tender age or 5 or 6. Not one of us are alcoholics or drug addicts today.

        • SMH says:

Not an addict but definitely a couple of brain cells short of a full set though.

If you as a people don’t hold your politicians accountable…this is what you get. No surprises here!

  18. North rock says:

GanjaGate !!!!!!!!!!!! Dunk, make him resign. He actually broke the law whether he was convicted or not, or whether he believes it or not. Others have said it…he is a loose cannon who thinks he can live in a world where he can do whatever he wants to do as long as he mouths off enough.

I cannot believe how ignorant tjhis fool sounds…well, on second thought…

    • Grizz says:

@North Rock but there was more than one MP that stated they had smoked marijuana so if we want to talk about who broke the law…didn’t all of them? So should they all resign

  19. Sheeple says:

These comments are just another example of how conditioned we are in our beliefs, fed to us by pharmaceutical companies and Governments. Do research on ancient uses of marijuana, especially tea. In a world were all of the food we ingest is genetically modified and/or is filled with pesticides, preservatives and additives (cancer causers) it is with blind ignorance that people believe that cannabis is a harm to a child in tea form. How many of you “good” parents pump your children full of processed food and medicines? Cannabis is deemed bad for you because who says so? The Governments around the world? The same governments who have conformed us into drones fattening their pockeys. Way more harmful substances are perfectly legal and marketed to us everyday via ads, tv, music, “latest studies”…. Ask questions and do your research.

    Awaken from the masses sheeple….

    • LiarLiar says:

I am all for the liberalisation of our outdated weed laws.

However, what happens when one smokes or ingests weed? People get high. Why do they get high? Because of the chemical reaction in our brains and so forth.

Do you honsetly believe that it is smart and safe to give such substances to a 2.5 year old child, whose brain isn’t even close to being developed?

My question to you is where is the medical evidence that states that giving THC to young children is a smart and safe alternative medicinal treatment?

Like I said allow for the use of weed for adults (i.e. 21 years and older), but to give it to a toddler is just wrong and irresponsible. One being a rasta does make them a doctor.

      • LiarLiar says:

*does NOT make them a doctor

      • Sheeple says:

My question back to you is – have you researched using cannabis as a tea? Because a Dr says to give your child a “modern medicine” do you question it or its numerous side effects or potential damage to your childs liver and other organs? My whole point is to enlighten yourself and that as a society we are predisposed now to follow one set one rules/laws etc. If you have ever read any medical journals you would realize the constant contradiction of them – which is usually driven by pharmeautical companies and their sales. Simply put – if his daughter was cured of asthma by a cup of this tea, can you honestly agree thats not better than years of nebulators/steriods (which infact have numerous side effects) or inhalers? I’m not here to constantly debate or go back and forth, that said MY personal opinion is that as a society we can be quick to judge and listen to what is “industry standard” instead of educating ourselves more and looking at natural medicines that cured the human race for thousands of years.

    • swing voter says:

yur missing the point. I personally don’t care what Beanie did or does in is personal life outside of politics. The problem is that he didn’t realize the value of separating and partitioning off the two ‘entities’….like Cannonier, he’s practically committed political suicide by revealing his personal lifestyle choices to the country, whilst speaking as the opposition leader no less. I’m sure the conservative membership of his party will want to discuss this. Then again, Ewart went on the rampage unhindered….perhaps Beanie’s revelation is nothing to them

      • Sheeple says:

I disagree. I indeed think you may be missing my entire point. Please refer to my reply to LiarLiar. Again I wont be debating all night. If you don’t agree – fine.

      • LOL (Original TM*) says:

You mean MP Mark Bean right lets be respectfull here

        LOL

    • Awaken says:

This is it! Pharmaceutical companies are in a multi-billion industry developing, promoting and selling medicines, drugs and treatments that are often harmful, too potent, not effective and expensive to us, the consumer. Question why in this case, marijuana is still illegal in most countries, while in others it is not and is decriminalized.

We need to question everything around us, and be aware, do your own research and get rid of stigmas we’ve had for so long.

    • Malcolm Raynor says:

Sheeple, you may be right. I am certainly no expert and I would let those qualified decide. However, as the Head of the Opposition whose main goal should be to get back in power, you must have the smarts to pick your battles. Ganja tea is not one of them.

      • Sheeple says:

My view is that he was simply being honest about positive uses of cannabis which I find refreshing. Im not a user of cannabis, but if my child were suffering with a potentially llimiting/threatening disease like asthma I would absolutely try it. I think it’s also worth keeping in mind that this happened decades ago before he was a politician. Society calls for our leaders to be transparent and honest – yet when they are (especially about something we judge to be wrong) the first things out of people’s mouth is he should resign etc etc. Hipocracy at its best.

        • TunnelVision says:

Agreed 100% Sheeple. The public is asking for transparency, but when ‘they’ speak ‘their’ truth and the public don’t agree they seek a resignation. (ahh, agree to disagree!)

He didn’t have to share his personal view but felt it necessary to share his testimony on his first hand experience just to get railroaded.

People in this country sadly are so contrary! So many holier than thou, perfect human specimens.

Note: He did not say parents with children with asthma should try this method; this was at least 17yrs ago and his daughter is fit and healthy.

NOW,can we get back to the matters really worth tackling – this island is so easily distracted by old news that we forget the real issues that need our immediate attention and to me this is old news. MOVE ON

  20. Awaken says:

“One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” – Thomas Jefferson

    • serengeti says:

You think he had a ‘moral responsibility’ to endanger the health of a baby?

      Riiight. Got it.

      • Global says:

@serengeti- Obviously you’re intentionally shunning the point/fiber of the statement.

        • serengeti says:

Nope. It is you who is avoiding what Bean did.

      • You.just.don't.get.it says:

His daughter looks fine to me. We have to stop idolizing and depending on doctors along with the pharmacuetical industry to dictate remedies for our health issues based on their subjective ‘research’. Doctor’s do have their place and yes some presciption medicine is beneficial, however, many of these products either mask the illnesses or create a host of life-lasting and life-threatening side effects in the process, while at the same time depleting our pockets. It was probably not the right forum, and the presentation might have been unprofessional, but I get Mr. Bean’s point.

    It’s the way it is.

All u people who fight against the ganja need to really educate yourself seriously.. This plant was used medically for over 3000 years it was only prohibited in the early 1930′s through false propaganda… Yet if the doctor tells u that u need these synthetic drugs that have side effects that cause u to need more synthetic drugs its ok… This plant is a natural herb and has so many beneficial uses.. So open your eyes and stop running from the cure…

    • JustAskin2 says:

The OBA trolls are not really fighting against ganja, they are simply looking for a hook to hang their hatred of the PLP on. And also using this as a begging or threatening point to persuade voters in future elections.

  29. JustAskin2 says:

I have no beef with Mr. Bean for admitting this. Rather than hurting his political career, it will probably make him more popular with mainstream Bermuda. I applaud his efforts to cure his daughter using a natural healing herb and having the courage to share his story. Makes him a real person rather than a talking head politician. And we identify.

Marijuana in it’s natural form is a great herb, well known for success with relieving symtoms for asthma and other illnesses. It looks like it is being legalized in many parts of the world for medicinal purposes. It is only by smoking, using it in it’s unnatural state that is detrimental.

Of course the OBA pundits will scream for his head (even though probably most of them smoke weed themselves) but this is without basis and yet another excuse to blast the PLP. No worries, though, Mr. Bean has shown himself as part of the people. At least he is a lot more honest than the OBA.

  30. is it just me? says:

is it just me?? OR did this happen 17yrs ago?? he should resign??? for what?? most Bermudians will not be shocked by this because our grandparents and parents would give us herb, lemongrass and mauby tea all summer long.

one day Bermuda will wake up and legalize it and start to reverse this stupid war on drugs. just imagine drugs were never made illegal….. think of all the $ saved, lives saved (from prison, gangs, overdose),

this is coming from someone who benefited from the sale of drugs for two decades.. successfully! guess who could have cut me out of the picture……….. yes the government! because ppl will still want and do drug whether legal or illegal.

it’s time ppl!!! let legalize weed 1st. then work on treatment and recovery of those addicted to other drugs.

    • JustAskin2 says:

I had all of the above herbs when I was a child and marijuana tea in later years. I hardly ever went to the doctor in those days.

Some of the pharmaceutical drugs nowadays have rat poison in them but we make a fuss about giving a child ganja tea.

It sure is a crazy world we live in.

  31. Gotham says:

I am for legalisation; but not child abuse, which this is even if well intentioned. Irresponsible is an under statement.

  32. Island Girl says:

He should resign as leader. The fact that he brought the incident up in Parliament speaks volume as to how he feels about it now. He has no remorse for what he did and would probably do it again today if placed in the same situation. Craig Cannonier while he didn’t do anything wrong, resigned and learnt from the experience while Marc Bean is proud of his actions. So if the PLP were in power would we want a leader that has no remorse about breaking the law.

    • anon says:

He clearly has displayed that he lacks the mature judgement required of someone that wants to be a leader of Bermuda.

  33. Straight up says:

Although I know many who do, I don’t smoke the stuff, nor am I even interested in a little puff puff pass. But with all this talk about potentially legislating or decriminalizing cannabis, can someone explain why it was even made illegal in the first place? Was it because of the harmful side effects or more so that the powers that be, can control it and make a mint from it?

    • Come Correct says:

Look up William Randolf Hurst and Harry J Aslinger. You’ll find your answers there and how they used racist propaganda to push their agenda. You’ll then probably wonder why human beings are so fricken stupid.

      • Global awareness says:

While I don’t endorse cannabis for children without the facts; it seems to me the well prescribed for children Ritalin is just as bad. It’s hypocritical to make noise about Bean’s ONE TIME dosage of cannabis tea when we as a community have no problem subjecting our newborns to chemicals even as their immune systems are still mostly forming but the professionals say its OK so no problem there. I don’t hear anyone complaining that maybe we should at least wait till they have a fully functioning immune system first! I couldn’t tell you the last time I have picked up my pumps of even had and asthma attack. some may disagree some may agree all in all Cannabis is a natural plant that is used in many different ways. so for one to say that this plant that was put on earth by the almighty him self is utter foolishness.

P.s weather you legalize it or not we still go smoke it any way!!!!!

im just saying leave the ganja mon alone tax it for all I care bring in coffee shops creates jobs for people can bring us out of debate. if you had Bermuda youth and people at heart and really want to change this island and reduce criminal activity. do the right thing and listen to us Bermudians as a whole and legalize it.

    • JustAskin2 says:

I personally know a lady who had chronic asthma for years, always in and out of the hospital, practically living on the asthma inhaler. She went on vacation to the West Indies where she had her first cup of marijuana tea (legal there). For the entire time that she was on vacation drinking that tea, she never had to use her pump one time, never visited the hospital. ‘Course the minute she got back to Bermuda, without that wonderful tea the asthma kicked right back up again. But after that trip, we noticed that the asthma didn’t appear to be quite as bad as it was before.

  45. Concerned Citizen says:

Marc Bean is actually the most honest, forthright politician Bermuda has ever had! I will vote PLP at the next election, and encourage my family to do so. What is Premier Dunkley’s opinion on “ganja” by the way? I mean his personal opinion? Haha!

    • JustAskin2 says:

Rather than being careless with his child’s life, he probably saved it. He certainly alleviated her suffering. I would do the same thing if I saw my child suffering in front of me and knew ganja tea would help.

Being honest and arrogrant is not my idea or a role model. Marc Bean is clearly saying that he does not care what you think he will do what he likes. If that is what he did then a leopard rarely sheds his spots. We have not heard from Craig yet nor the outcome of the investigation. All we know is he resigned. I am sure when the time is right he will tell his side of the story. I feel the PLP has used this and blew it up personally and I voted PLP btw! I am so sick of this crap, argue about something worthwhile. marc you have lost me now with all this crap. I have a child who suffered the same way, it was bronchiolitis (sp) it was awful but he is alive and grew out of it. I di dnot give him ganja tea nor would I have considered it because I am not a doctor and you being a rasta does not cut it. I don’t hear anyone saying “miracle cure.” I do hear about many individual cases of lives being improved though. As a medical ethics professor in a university, I am familiar with many positive testimonies. I am all for more research, but far more research has been done on this herb than any of the new FDA approved pharmaceuticals that come out every year.

  52. Oh please says:

I am not going to sit her and debate on whether or not marijuana should be legal. I will say these things:

    1. Whether you want it legal or not, it currently is not permitted and young Bermudians have quite harshly been put on the ‘Stop List’ for travel because of small amounts of possession, so I find it highly hypocritical a politician has the right to flaunt such behaviours without reprimand. The law is the law, and I am sorry but although again I won’t debate if the law should go all together, I will say banning its use isn’t unjustly harsh, but rather punishments for small usage are. As a politician he needs to be abiding by the law as it stands as such.

    2. Even if it was legal, so are cigarettes, alcohol, and even caffeine via coffee etc. Would you be giving a 3 year old any of the above as an intelligent parent? I really do not think so. I really do not think a 3 year old needs to be having such in their small body.

    3. Please do not conduct yourself as if you are a scientist. Making statements like “One cup of ganja tea” cured my toddler of asthma because I have it to them once is totally ridiculous to claim. That’s like me saying because one time I asked for it to rain on Valentine’s Day because I was single and it did; therefore I have power over Mother Nature. “Theories,” as wild as they might be, need to be repeated over and over in the same circumstances with repeated outcomes to get a valid conclusion. Did you never participate in a Science Fair?

    4. We now have foreign news agencies picking up on the story as if Bermuda was not mocked and laughed at enough via other media because of the Uighurs nonsense. So Marc Bean will you now censure yourself as you have called on some in the OBA to do? I really think you are the one that needs to do so as so often when that mouth opens people cringe and I think Bermuda has enough bad press.

  53. Silence Do Good says:

Not condoning his actions with a young child, however that’s a parents call in my opinion. My guess is a lot of readers and commentators smoke cigarettes at home which impact their children. The illegality of smoking cannabis is well known however if used in the form of a tea…should it be??
Herbal remedies have been in use around the world, including here in Bermuda for centuries and often are proven better than man-made remedies. Many of us have drank Father John tea to get rid of a fever.
Perhaps he should not have used the word “cure” as we all know the experts, regulators, doctors and pharmaceutical companies hate that word when applied to alternative medicines. I believe the FDA sued someone for saying that Vitamin C cures Scurvy…something that ancient mariners proved.

  55. Tricks are for Kids says:

Despite all this hoopla going back and forth over something that happened many years ago his daughter is FINE…there is NOTHING wrong with her …she is FINE…..now we can sit here and debate back and forth and we can sit and debate the legal aspects till the cow comes home…HOWEVER, how one cares to raise a child is THEIR business. I have yet to meet a PERFECT parent or a PERFECT person for that matter. There are in fact MANY NATURAL cures out there that doctors or the FDA will not tell us about because medicine is a money making industry……Now I’m no expert (just like many of you commenting) nor do I profess to be but if Marc feels that HE did the right thing as a parent than that is on him….it is not up to you or I to make that JUDGEMENT call…..

OK so that video describes the effects of SMOKING marijuana, these effects are the same in SMOKING cigarettes. I think we can all agree that smoking period is bad for you. Smoking marijuana and ingesting it orally will have completely different effects on the body. Also most people when they smoke marijuana they add cigarette to it, however smoking plain hash is not harmful to the brain at all as most of the ‘harmful’ properties are removed. There are 2 main chemicals in marijuana; Tetrahydrocannabinol(THC) and Cannabinoid(CBD). As we’ll all know the THC is what gets you high but the CBD’s counteract the high and keep you from having a bad high. When cannibis is brewed as a tea or cooked into butter to make cannabutter the amount of THC with be lowered and its more CBD than THC. therefore the high isn’t as instance as if you were smoking it. The CBD’s are absorbed and they connect to cannabinoid receptors throughout the human body to trigger the pain relief.

    • Fur Real says:

Whats the % between the THC and CBD that Marc Bean used? Don’t know” Ahh. There are strains of Cannabis being developed for nedical use with a very high content of CBD! Point is this, the level of administration requires specific analysis for proper medical administration! And, agree or disagree the fact of the matter that content of THC is Cannabis Sativa legally is irrelevant to the point that what he admitted doing (possession, supply and administration are all currently CRIMINAL OFFENCES!!!!! Your argument is interesting but at the end of the day lacks any merit on the real issue!

Someone said how can a weed head be a gomint official ?

  62. Malachi says:

I live in a household of asthmatics: my wife, my daughter, and my grand-daughter. I have been present in the doctor’s office with each one of them on several occasions and as such, am familiar with the disease.

As I read Mr. Bean’s story, I was reminded of what was recently told to my daughter by her doctor regarding her three-and-a-half year daughter. She said that many people suffer asthma symptoms as babies and toddlers, but, as they grow, these symptoms can disappear forever without intervention. My wife had awful asthma until about age eighteen, after which she has had none. (She is now past sixty).

All of this to say that Mr. Bean should be careful with the word “cure”, as his daughter may have outgrown the symptoms anyhow.

    • Whistling Frog says:

And what about those that haven’t outgrown their symptoms? My daughter is 24 yrs. young and has gotten worst, all because she has been over medicated with what the doctor prescribed.

So you should be careful with what your doctor has told you…

  64. jahB says:

It is quite interesting reading the commentry regarding giving children drugs. With the proliferation of ADD and ADHD diagnosis of our children has anyone stopped to check and realise that there are absolutely no scientifically proven basis for for such diagnosis. Yyet we readily drug our children with pharmaceuticals in an effort to cure that which is for the most part a subjective condition. Hypocrisy at its best. Dont take my word for it look it up.
For a lot of pharmaceutical drugs the lists of side effects far outnumber the benefits.

  65. Sad but the Truth says:

Marc Bean is the SECRET plan for the OBA. He is planted in the PLP to make them look bad. Every media headline he gets is always a backwards step for the PLP. He is a covert OBA operative and the PLP should really evaluate him as a leader and a statesman. No leader of the Opposition could be that loose with the lips that they sink the whole SHIP. I am embarrassed as a PLP supporter. What a disgrace is this leader.

    • Loving Togetherness says:

How weak are the OBA now? This is the last straw they are reaching for red meat. This is getting really silly and outrageous. Theory is way over the wall and crazy. Just to think I supported the OBA, but their last actions over the past month has me looking in another direction.

  66. Alvin Williams says:

Well the UBP/oba will grasp anything in an attempt to raise the heavy rock that is jet-gate?
But I know one thing before drug prescriptions and drug stores there was herbal remedies and Bermuda was no less a participant for the latter.
My dear departed grandmother told me stories of their use and use some of that know how on me as a child.
There has always been a great divide between traditionally trained doctors and the herbalist. That is not to say that those who are in the medical field and who train as doctors; nurses and other aspects of medical care did not have a calling to help the sick; a very noble thing indeed. But if the truth be told in recent times an unholy alliance has form between the medical establishment and the drug producers involving billions of dollars. Antibodies once considered to be the great savior of mankind in it’s struggle against disease may be back firing on us as more and more resistance germs make their appearance; rendering their use increasingly ineffectual. Than what a return to the herbalists and folk remedies? Marijuana as controversial as it is; has it’s place as a folk remedy and has been use for thousands of years; but like every thing man touches has been abused. but I believe marijuana will find it’s place in man’s constant battle against disease and the controversy we now see over it’s medical use will have faded away.

    • Unbelievable says:

Oh whatever Alvin. You’d believe the sky was purple if Marc Bean told you it was.

    • Fur Real says:

REally Alvin…OBA is using this ILLEGAL ACT to “raise a heavy rock” about a breach of code of conduct that has no legal affect…you really are a tea drinker!

  67. Tricks are for Kids says:

I guess to each its own. …To those that “dislike” the comments that support Mr. Bean what are YOUR views on Ritalin? …I personally have a problem with that prescribed drug but I guess your okay with it…judging Marc about his choice buy yet people are “drugging” their kids EVERYBODY. ….I

    • Fur Real says:

But they do it legally and with a medical prescription…his actions, agree or disagree are still ILLEGAL…and he is making all the noise about breach of a code of conduct!!!!

      • Tricks are for Kids says:

So because it’s LEGAL (presciption medicine)it’s OKAY to drug your children is what you’re saying??????

        • Think says:

Legal drugs go through incredibly extensive testing for many years that prove their effectiveness before they’re sold. It’s the responsible thing to do as a parent to give your children drugs that have gone through that testing to make sure they’re safe and effective (provided they need them, of course). While Marijuana may have some beneficial health effects, curing asthma is not one of them, and it speaks volumes to his character that he would give it to an infant.

          • Tricks are for Kids says:

APPROVED drugs are not always safe either.. .look at the side effects of the “supposed” cure….half the time the side effects are worse than the sickness the drugs were for…..just because it hasn’t been proven does not mean that it isn’t. …who knows??..will THEY tell you if it is?..probably not because it is easily accessible. ..just like the cures they have for other illnesses but don’t tell you about….they’d rather you take n pay for chemo and radiation…..as for speaking on Marc’s character it’s not my place to judge….that is not something I do…

      • Evie says:

You sound stupid be quiet SMDH we get it you don’t like him cool we get it

  68. jt says:

I maintain that one cup of the tea did not result in a cure.
I suspect it was something much more plausible – change in diet, residence (esposure to dust, mold, heavy local pollen), pet situation etc. etc.
There is also the possibility that the child suffered from allergies as opposed to asthma. Not sure if there was an official diagnosis, but even if there were the two are often mis-diagnosed and/or related in younger children.

  69. Fur Real says:

Agree or disagree with use of Cannabis it is STILL ILLEGAL, all this noise the PLP and Bean are making about a breach of code of conduct but its OK for him to UNLAWFULLY possess a drug and UNLAWFULLY give it to a 2 year old! Really PLP tea drinkers??? You would be having a march demanding resignations if the shoe was on the other foot! Some honesty here would be welcome!

Bermudians from what I observe, are some of the most judgmental people on the face of this Earth. How could you judge people from what they did almost 20 years ago. The sheeple is so gullible its a shame. Just like a dog who has a bone in his mouth, sees a juicier bone, drops the bone already in his mouth to pick up the what appears a juicier bone. You people do that everyday. You people are so conditioned to think that Doctors know it all and that anything that is natural is not as effective.

Just to open your mind again. The War on Drugs is not about drugs, it’s about a War on our Human Rights. It’s all a joke. How can you make illegal Atoms and Isotopes, Carbon and Nitrogen. Rearrange these atoms and you get parsley. By the way, Everything is made up of the same Elements including Us. Also did you know that humans are all born with Cannabinoid Receptors and Breast Milk naturally produces it? I guess soon they’re going to prohibit breast milk. The Super Food for Babies.

Open your conditioned, programmed minds sheeple, before it’s too late.

  72. Sheelagh will and for all I can tell will always be availed to tow the line, give the response that is required of her,but this is my observation of her truth….Russions give vodka to there younge as do several other cultures…..in actual fact….the crying of a baby just born has this reaction too ,it comes from a desperate and 8passioned and desperate overwhelming desire of a parent to help their young….to stop the suffering of their younge…….not to understand this rational is abase to the human condition entirely….at which point arises the question….your point exactly???????

  73. So…Sheelagh….when I need your opinion…I’ll pay for it….

  74. Alan Gordon says:

Time to talk to some other doctors, and get a second opinion.

Dr. Chiappa and the other critics are not being forthright, or else they have been woefully misled.

Cannabis has been used as an effective, safe asthma remedy for thousands of years, and numerous medical journal articles prove it. Still, the Bermuda Sun saw fit to publish interviews from 3 doctors who disapproved, and didn’t manage to find any Doctors who use cannabis to treat asthma.

With regard to the brain damage claims made by Dr. Chiappa, they are extremely misleading…He says: “no study disproves this” and yet, if those studies were held to the same standard as ones which show cannabis to be safe and beneficial, they would crumble. The studies he cites have been heavily criticised in medical literature as flawed in study design and interpretation of results. They are funded by Big Pharm, or by Governments lobbied by Big Pharm, and are intended to remove cannabis from competition against patented pharmaceuticals, none of which would withstand the level of critique that cannabis receives….

Big Pharm has been caught fudging test data, giving kickbacks to doctors for over-prescribing, and laundering those kickbacks. The safety standards Dr. Chiappa insists on for medical cannabis would eliminate from use all the other drugs he prescribes.

    • Loving Togetherness says:

Well said Mr. Gordon, Alvin Williams and Truthseeker. All have made some key points.

  75. Truthseeker says:

In response to Dr. Perinchief, Sheelah Cooper and Liz Boden, its so like these westerners with there supremest views to berate a black man for raising and caring for his child in a way that they are unfamiliar with, and is not supported by them. Contrary to what they all are saying, there is a lot of testing being done particularly to children to help treat and yes ‘CURE’ aliments and diseases. Western Doctors and professionals know very little about eastern practices and should not claim to know more or outrank these practices that have existed for centuries. If you want to solely look at western studies as a basis for ‘doing what is right’ look up Rickki Lake’s new documentary “Weed The People”. This documentary follows the family of an infant who is being treated with medical marijuana for a life threatening disease. Without it the child would not have gotten better. Just because it’s illegal it does not negate the power ad benefits of the plant (not drug). I just wish people would stop being so close-minded about everything, we need to stop only looking at doctors and professionals to tell us how to live our lives.

You Trolls slay me with your anti this party that party rants. Marc sometimes doesnt do himself any favours with his honesty….but that is the thing at least he is honest.

  80. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

Liz Boden is only repeating what she was taught, so i really can’t blame her…that is all she knows… how to relay the message of must get a DR.s approval for a prescriptions for life membership adding in the lil scare about how asthma is life threatening(which it is)i agree but then there is this…

Asthma is one of the most ubiquitous chronic inflammatory diseases in the U.S., affecting an estimated 35 million people, and claiming the lives of 4,000 each year. The disease is typically caused by inflammation of the bronchial tubes, causing the chest to become tight and breathing fairly difficult. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing (especially at night), shortness of breath, and pain or pressure in the chest. While not every case of asthma is identical, the treatments for all cases are similar.
Current Methods of Treating Asthma Patients
Anti-inflammatory drugs are the most popular treatment among people suffering from asthma. The steroids are inhaled through devices called inhalers, which are short-acting broncho-dilators. Broncho-dilators work to open your airway passages relieving shortness of breath, wheezing, cough and chest tightness caused by asthma.
“Asthma affects an estimated 35 million people each year, claiming the lives of 4,000 Americans each year.”
Some patients with more serious cases of asthma treat themselves with nebulizer breathing-treatments. A nebulizer is an in-home (tabletop) machine that changes the medication from a liquid, to a mist so that can be more easily dissolved by the lungs when inhaled (similar to a vaporizer for your herb). Many of these treatments are known to cause restlessness, headaches, nausea, and even more serious side effects such as seizures.
If you have been keeping up with our articles about the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD and the benefits of THC, you probably know where this is headed… Now, we are not going to sit here and tell you that lighting plant matter on fire and inhaling the hot smoke is helpful to an asthma patients lungs, or anyone’s lungs for that matter.
    Vaporize Your Herbs… Quit Smoking!
asthma1We recognize the fact that the smoke of marijuana may be harmful to your lungs. However, studies have proven that THC acts as a temporary (1-2 hours) bronchodilator, especially when ingested; this is common knowledge by now. The New England Journal of Medicine, published a 1973 study that stated, “Marihuana smoke, unlike cigarette smoke, causes broncho-dilation rather than broncho-constriction [narrowing of the air passages] and, unlike opiates, does not cause central respiratory depression.”
Additionally, patients suffering from asthma probably do not want to actually smoke marijuana either. Think of heat as a bad thing, especially combustion or fuems from fire. This is exactly why most patients switch to vaporizing their cannabis. Through the use of vaporizers, most people claim they can stay medicated, with out the harmful side effects of smoke (of any sort).
Cannabinoids Proven to Enhance Lung Function
While marijuana smoke has some of the same toxins as tobacco smoke, the cannabinoids in Cannabis work in a way to counter act the harmful effects of the smoke. So are your lungs actually ever really damaged? This is yet to be proven.
Another long-term study (20 years) done from 1985 to 2006, examined 5,000 subjects from three American cities. The researchers questioned the participants about their cannabis and cigarette use, and tested lung capacity as well as rate of air flow out of their lungs. To their surprise, the researchers found that at moderate levels of cannabis smoking, lung volume and air flow rates both increased with each “joint year” (365 joints), up until seven joint-years (or 2,555 joints). Although the net increase only amounts to about one-seventh of a soda can, it’s still a victory for pot smokers.
“Marijuana smoke, unlike cigarette smoke, causes broncho-dilation [opening] rather than broncho-constriction [narrowing of the air passages] and, unlike opiates, does not cause central respiratory depression.” – New England Journal of Medicine
While some may argue that lung capacity is increased because of long inhales and the holding of breath that goes with cannabis smoking, that doesn’t explain why the lungs of cannabis-only smokers didn’t worsen like the lungs of cigarette smokers. There is more happening behind the scenes.
Some asthmatics have found relief through the use of Marinol, a synthetic (man-made) pill-form of THC. Although the drug has greater psychoactive properties than actual cannabis and is said to be far less effective, it is still more effective than inhalers or nebulizers for most patients. We believe that asthma patients will benefit from the ingestion of cannabis because of its anti-inflammatory effects, through the use of edibles or tincture. For patients that have serious cases of asthma, ingesting hemp oil in its raw form could provide long-term preventative relief as an alternative to smoking. Maybe vaporizing could even be the new “breathing treatment”, who knows?
Cannabis Known To Help Cleanse Sinuses & Lungs
nettypotOften doctors refer patients to use a neti pot to clear clogged sinuses in the morning, a frequent problem among asthma patients. Some people dislike this method because it just feels weird, and is not exactly what someone looks forward to doing each and every morning.
It’s been reported that vaporizing waxes and other concentrates (especially with very high amounts of cannabinoids), often opens up your airways and sinuses, acting as a bronchodilator. Needless to say, much more scientific research must be done on the various intake methods of cannabis in relation to asthma patients. With over 35 million people effected each year, you would think any possible cure or antidote would be considered and researched heavily — to help provide some scientific backing that would help an enormous amount of suffering people. Only time will tell.

  82. Sara says:

If you people only knew how toxic the food, prescription medication, and OTC medication was for your children you would feel like an idiot for passing judgment on giving a medicinal tea to a children. I would also like to add that deep fried food is absolutely horrid for your child and if you allow them to have it more than occasionally, you are indeed harming them.
