June 1, 2014

bball140531The YAO Cal Ripken Baseball Season continued at the YAO Ball Park at Kindley Field this weekend.

In the opener, four first-inning runs helped the Cubs to a 7-5 win over the Yankees. The Cubs scored in the first on a walk by Alex Downey, followed by two wild pitches. The Cubs held off the Yankees, as the Yankees were unable to overcome the Cubs early lead.

This was helped by strong defensive plays by Cubs first baseman Quincy Kuzyk and third baseman Jadan Malpas. The Yankees scored on an RBI single by Finn Smith in the third inning, an error and RBI single by Jack Martin in the fourth, but it was still not enough for a Yankee comeback.

The Cubs were led by Alex Bordage and Jackson Spurling at the plate, combining for four hits and two RBIs. In the top of the 6th strong fielding by Kuzyk again, shut down the Yankees.

In the other match the Orioles used their two left handers as bookends to defeat the Phillies 28 – 17. Narsje Brockington held the Phillies to one run in his only inning of work, and Liam McCue came into the game to record the final three outs. The Orioles capitalized on some wildness by the Phillies pitchers to plate 28 runs. Caleb Ingham, Conner Somerville, Keiran Malott, and Brett Baumgartner each scored three times. For the Phillies, among their 17 runs, Caden Williams and Kaelin Paynter each scored three times, while James Ives scorched several hard hit balls.
