BBA To Host 100km Road Race On Sunday

August 20, 2014

2014 marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Bermuda Bicycle Association in 1974. To celebrate this milestone the BBA will best hosting a 100 kilometer road race on the morning of Sunday, August 24th.

The start of the event will be from Lindo’s Family Foods in Warwick and then follow Harbour Road where competitors will then make a loop of the perimeter of Bermuda, taking in St. George, St. David’s, South Road, Dockyard and back to the finish on Harbour Road in Paget.

The winner of the event will be the first recipient of a new trophy called the Presidents Cup which will recognize the contributions of the 12 presidents that have lead the BBA. The trophy will be presented at a post-race breakfast held at the home of current BBA president Peter Dunne and it is anticipated that most of his predecessors will be in attendance.

In addition to the race, a social group ride of lesser distance will start with the competitors at 7:30AM and follow the same route under police escort until Black Watch Pass when the race will officially commence and separate from the group ride.

The BBA’s leaders have been Leopold Kuchler, Delano Ingham, David Sabir, Joey Richardson, Carlos DeSilva, Vance Stevens, Jeff Payne, Greg Hopkins, Martin Bolton, Dannielle Bezant, Francois Bertrand, and Peter Dunne.

The organizers would like to make the public aware that the event will be moving under a police escort and at times road traffic will be asked to give way to the race. While there are likely to be interruptions to normal traffic flow it is anticipated that these should be minimal given the pace of the group. The event will conclude at approximately 10:25am just west of Chapel Road in Paget. A map of the race course is below along with approximate passing times at noted landmarks.

The BBA said, “The public is encouraged to come out and watch this exciting event which will include Bermuda’s top cyclists from the Commonwealth Games, Dominique Mayho and Nicole Mitchell as well as potential candidates to represent Bermuda at the up-coming Caribbean Cycling Championships.
