BELCO Update: Transmission Upgrade Project
BELCO’s provided an update on the Transmission Upgrade Project in the west end of the island.
A spokesperson said, “Trenching to lay conduit that will house BELCO’s underground transmission cables resumed in February and has now reached the Railway Trail at Frank’s Bay. Works will continue along the Railway Trail until it reaches the area where the trail meets Middle Road opposite the entrance to Whale Bay Road in Southampton. There will then be a short section of trenching along Middle Road to the BELCO substation at the entrance to Evans Bay Road.
“Once the project reaches Evans Bay, there will be a pause in work. In the third quarter of this year, BELCO crews will excavate sections of the trench to pull sections of cable and joint the new cables. Traffic controls, including manual traffic controls during rush hour periods, will be back in place when the sections of cables are pulled through the conduit and jointed together.
“On the Railway Trail where trenching will continue, trees have been trimmed and a safe path has been created for walkers, runners and pedal bikes utilising the railway trail. However, the area is a construction zone and we urge the public to exercise extreme caution when moving near open trenches. When possible, the public should plan accordingly and refrain from entering the construction area.
“There will be allowances made to provide local motor vehicle access to properties on the Railway Trail. There may be instances where access may be temporarily blocked, and our crews will work with the impacted residents.
“The Transmission, Distribution & Retail [TD&R] assets are being upgraded to improve reliability, reduce costs and expand grid capacity.”
BELCO Managing Director, Shelly Leman said, “Trenching associated with our transmission upgrade project in the west end has now reached the Railway Trail so traffic controls on Middle Road will shortly be removed. I continue to encourage everyone to drive safely around open trenches and working crews. I thank the public for their patience and understanding and look forward to the project being completed and ensuring a more reliable, and resilient network for all our customers.”
The spokesperson said, “More information about the Transmission Upgrade Project can be found on BELCO’s website at belco.bm.”
