Police, BIOS Vessels Assist 2 Disabled Boats

A distress call made on Friday [Aug 1] by a woman aboard a disabled pleasure boat resulted in a rescue that involved two police vessels and one Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences [BIOS] vessel helping two endangered craft to reach the shore.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre [BMOC] spokesperson said, “On Friday, August 1, at 9.30pm, BMOC received a call from a distressed woman on a pleasure boat at Fort St. Catherine Beach.

“The boat she was on was disabled and drifting toward the rocks. The woman also reported that another boat, which was trying to assist, was also in the same situation. The on duty watchkeeper at BMOC requested a police land unit and a marine units attend.

“The watchkeeper then commenced urgency broadcasts on VHF, requesting any vessels in the vicinity to assist. Marine Police vessels Heron 3 and Rescue 1 proceeded to the scene, as well as the BIOS vessel Endurance.

“Police land units at the scene soon confirmed that all persons on the two boats had made it safely to shore, and the Marine units and the Endurance stood down.”
