In addition to all the new fall series premieres television fans can expect to enjoy, September is looking like a great month for specials, some you surely won’t want to miss, so think about setting your DVRs if you can’t catch these gems directly.

“Houdini”

A special four-hour, two-night mini-series to show on Monday, September 1 and Tuesday, September 2 at 10.00pm on History Channel

Today, nearly 90 years after his death, Harry Houdini’s name is still synonymous with the title, “The greatest escape artist of all time.” In this special two-part series, Adrien Brody ["The Pianist"] plays the role of Houdini, whose real name was Erich Weiss, born in Budapest and later relocated to America with his immigrant parents.

Official “Houdini” trailer:

Fascinated to the point of obsession with magic at a very early age, Weiss started off performing on street corners for pocket change before making a career out of his art, which he always described as trickery, not magic. Houdini’s career really took off when he engaged Jim Collins [played by Evan Jones of "Criminal Minds] to be his assistant.

Collins is the mastermind inventor who built Houdini’s various devices, including the famous Chinese water torture tank. While examining the life of this mysterious man, the show also explains in detail how each illusion and escape worked.

“9/10: The Final Hours”

A special two-hour documentary to air on Sunday, September 7 at 9.00pm on National Geographic

September 11, 2001 will forever be remembered as a day that changed everything about the way we see the world. This special documentary takes us behind the scenes to the moments that preceded the tragedy.

Official “9/10: The Final Hours” preview:

In the words of Director Erik Nelson, “So many films have told the story of the unfolding tragedy of September 11 that we decided to explore what happened on the eve of that moment — a new look at the life, and not the death, of the World Trade Center and the men and women who worked there.

September 10, 2001, was just a day like any other, but of course, it was so much more than that. We’ve tried to construct a time portal back to that day, back to this now lost world.”

“Bill Maher: Live Without Interruption”

A special comedy presentation to air on Friday, September 12, at 11.00pm on HBO

This live comedy event features Maher in his tenth solo stand-up special since his HBO debut in 1989. Let’s hope he’s got lots of coffee on hand.

    Dear CableVision,

I’d consider turning cable on again if you’d allow me to choose à la carte the channels I subscribe to. I’ll understand if there are some channels that must be made available (like the local ones and government ones) in an extremely basic bundle (being only those local and government channels). However, anything other than this in the “local” basic bundle and anything other than an à la carte selection of the remaining then I’ll not bother with turning cable back on. I’ve no interest in paying for tons of channels to get the few that interest me.

    Kind Regards,

    Ride
