Photos, Video & Results: Lobster Tournament
Lobster season kicked off in a big way, with over 100 people entering today’s [Sept 1] Lobster Tournament, which saw the participants catch some 450lbs pounds of lobster in total, with an average weight of 4lbs 6oz.
Tom Steinhoff had the heaviest lobster at 8lbs 12oz, David MacPhee and Paul Lindo tied for second with both hauling in catches tipping the scales at 8lbs 2oz, Robert Kennedy was fourth with a 7lbs 3oz lobster, while Iain Stewart rounded out the top five with a 7lbs catch.

Corbin White and and Kip Malpas were the top juniors with both reeling in catches weighing 3lbs 12oz, while the top boat was the Lobster Terriers with a total of 49lbs 15 oz. The event was sponsored by Makin Waves, with the weigh-in taking place at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club, and the full results are here [PDF].
Lobster season runs from September 1 to March 31 in Bermuda, and to participate in the tournament entrants had to adhere to all current government sport diving lobster regulations.

The man’s got a point. We wouldn’t think of eating roaches or spiders, but a similar creature with a couple extra limbs… is considered a delicacy.
May be a little creepy if you think of it that way.
An expensively overpriced delicacy as well!
Just leave them be. Not so long ago there were over three billion passenger pigeons, but we ate them out of existence… must we deplete the oceans too?
That is why there are license requirements, size limits, bag limits & season limits.
We have speed limits too and look how well that’s going!
Guess the Government will have to ban the dealers from selling bikes & cars. Would that stop it?
Well, we kind of need those to get around. We can get by just fine, however, without killing every species we fancy. I don’t have a problem if culling the lionfish as they are also destroying our ecosystem. Just my opinion mate. I’m keenly aware that most Bermudians aren’t going to be going vegan anytime soon. People won’t care about preserving what we’ve got until it’s too late. I find it quite sad. But carry on, I know you will.
Which not all people abide by. The Marine Police need to watch carefully, and I hope I can get a lobster dinner when I go out to get one.
