Rugby Results & Video: Mad Hatters Cup
The Bermuda Rugby Football Union’s [BRFU] 2014/15 season kicked off at the National Sports Center on Saturday [Sept 13] with the ‘Mad Hatters Cup’. The trophy competition was a Round Robin event with Police Men and the Mariners Ladies emerging as champions.
Ladies Division:
The Mariners got two tries from Ali James, while Amanda Swan and Gina Newson added single tries in their 4 – 0 win over the Teachers. The Police got two tries from Isabel Van Der Westhuizen and a single try from Mika Tomita in their 3 – 1 win over the Renegades. Orla Halpin scored the lone try for the Renegades.
Swan and Newson went over for a try each in helping the Mariners defeat the Police 2 – 0 while Amy Harvey scored the lone try for the Renegades in their 1 – 0 victory over the Teachers.
The Mariners then defeated the Renegades 1 – 0 with a try from Caroline Aberhardt and then the Police defeated the Teachers 3 – 1. Going over for the Police were LaReine Prinsloo, Mika Tomita and Isabel Van Der Westhuizen while Jillian Cross scored the lone try for the Teachers.
Men’s Division:
The first match in the Men’s Division saw the Mariners and Teachers play to a scoreless draw. The Police defeated the Renegades 19 – 7. The Renegades got on the board first with a try from Conor McGlynn while Paul Kelly kicked the conversion making the score 7 – 0. A try from Gerhardt Lambrecht and a conversion by Mike Kane drew the Police level at 7 – 7.
Police went ahead 14 – 7 when Ryan Murray scored a try and Mike Kane kicked the conversion. The game was then over as a contest when Tommy Edwards scored a try for Police to earn them the 19 – 7 win.
The next match saw the Mariners and Police play to a scoreless draw. The Renegades then defeated the Teachers 17 – 15.
The Renegades got 2 tries from Daniel Nash while Paul Kelly kicked two conversions and a penalty. Andre Landy scored a try for Teachers, added a conversion and kicked a penalty while Peter Otin added a try.
The Police then defeated the Teachers 17 – 12. Roedolf van der Westhuizen scored two tries for the Police while Dane Cole added a try and Tommy Edwards kicked a conversion. Andre Landy did all the scoring for Teachers in this match scoring two tries and kicking one conversion.
The Final match of the day saw the Renegades defeat the Mariners 3 – 0 with a Paul Kelly penalty kick.
