Photos & Video: Good Friday In England
Bermudians living in Britain gathered in Coventry, West Midlands to celebrate the island’s culture at a Good Friday community event.
The “Good Friday Fun Day”, organised by Dennis Zuill and Justin Denbrook, was held at the Dunlop Sports and Social Club and featured activities including a kite-making competition, a fish cake contest and an Easter egg hunt.
Mr Zuill, a former Bermuda national team and Dandy Town footballer, said the event aimed to bring together Bermudians living in Britain while passing on cultural traditions to younger generations.
“Having kids born in the UK, it’s important to us that they understand our culture,” he told Bernews. “This day is about teaching them about Gombeys, kite flying and how to make kites — bringing families together.”
He said attendees had travelled from across England, including Bolton, Leeds and Manchester.
Among those present was undefeated professional boxer Tyler Christopher, who lives in nearby Birmingham.
“It’s great for UK-based Bermudians to get together,” he said. “This is my first time at the event and I wanted to show my support. It’s a nice turnout and a great group of people.”
Arlene Simmons said the event drew a strong crowd, adding that a highlight for her was enjoying a traditional Bermudian fish sandwich on raisin bread.
Family entertainment also included a fun zone, face painting and raffles with prizes on offer.
Chrisanthi Bartley-Waldron, who offered face painting inside the clubhouse, said Bermudians had come together to celebrate and take part in the activities.
