Photos: BWSC Holds Fall Seminar & Cruise

October 7, 2014

The Bermuda Water Safety Council [BWSC] recently held its second annual fall seminar and safety cruise, with nearly 50 participants attending the session.

Held at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, the seminar included a series of lectures covering topics including navigation and safety equipment, the use of radio equipment, and personal flotation devices, followed by a cruise aboard the ferry Resolute.

A spokesperson said, “On October 5, nearly 50 people attended the Bermuda Water Safety Council’s second annual fall seminar and safety cruise. It is refreshing to note that nearly all of the participants were attending the seminar for the first time.”

“The evening at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club began with a series of lectures with representatives from Bermuda Harbour Radio, the Marine Police, and the Chairman of the WSC. These lectures covered information on the latest navigation and safety equipment, the use of radio communication equipment, and a practical interactive session on the use of personal flotation devices.

“The lectures were once again followed by a cruise aboard the ferry Resolute, provided by the Department of Marine and Ports. The participants were taken to the Great Sound, where everyone was given the opportunity to fire safety rockets and flares. The reality is that boaters are not allowed to practice firing their rockets or flares and would not know what to do in an emergency.

“The training given on the safety cruise was meant to give everyone aboard the chance to learn first hand how to use the equipment which can fire a rocket propelled parachute flare 1,000 feet in the air.”

“The evening was an absolute success and the Bermuda Water Safety Council would like to thank Lindos for their sponsorship of the event, along with the Department of Marine and Ports and and the Captain and Crew of the Resolute for providing the ferry for the evening.

“The Council will likely offer a boat handling seminar once again in April of 2015 as they did in 2014 and look forward to assisting the Bermuda Boating public with the safe operation of their vessels.”
