Photos & Video: Machine Removed From Water
Correia Construction were on site today [Oct 7] at the Airport Waste Management Facility to remove an excavator that slid overboard yesterday.
Yesterday the Ministry of Public Works said that a “dangerous occurrence took place today at the Airport Waste Management Facility involving an excavator belonging to an external contractor working on behalf of the Ministry of Public Works.”
“The Ministry is grateful to report that there were no injuries,” a spokesperson said.”The incident occurred this afternoon when in the process of extending the land reclamation area in the southeast corner of the Airport Waste Management Facility the excavator tracked on unstable ground and slipped into the sea.
“The operator jumped to safety and was not injured. Approximately half of the excavator undercarriage is submerged underwater.
“The Ministry of Public Works personnel are working with the owner of the excavator and have hired a floating barge in the hope that the excavator might be salvageable.
“Under the Occupational Safety & Health Regulations 2009 this incident is classified as a dangerous occurrence. The incident will be fully investigated.

Can this site really still be called a “waste management facility”? All they’re doing is throwing the crap overboard, putting sand and and concrete ash blocks. Looks like a huge land fill to me..What about pollution? Bermuda never cares about that till it too late!
i suggest you go down there and ask your questions…
Questions.I only asked one question. Secondly, who do you think I should ask these questions at this site. The worker who monitors trucks coming and going who could care less about why this is a practice in the 20th century?
Looks like all you do is question people statements about their own suggestions. Dont we all pay taxes to pay people to come up with better solutions/alternatives?
21st Century – and not the realitor
and you’re still asking questions of the wrong people …you jus dont get it do you…
No, seems as if you don’t get it
Spare parts anyone.
I CANNOT believe that we dump garbage into the ocean!!!! We really are a 3rd world country… and made up of idiots. Seriously, who dumps garbage into the ocean? This is beyond disgraceful. Shame on Bermuda.
so what are your suggestions for garbage disposal..?
Aaahhh, how do you think de Causeway got built, LANDFILL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wrong . Again .
You don’t know the difference between the Causeway and its construction and Kindley Field Road .
Just more misinformation from you . As usual .
Dont we pay our government to come up with those answers? If we have to do it ourselves then why even bother to elect leaders in the first place?
And to make matters worse, they chose to do it right by the airport where visitors to the island come and go.
Our air arrivals might not be much compared to the cruise ship visitors but the airline visitors spend the $$$.
Way to welcome them to Bermuda and send them off with this great view!
A land reclamation project taking place at our airport?! Oh the humanity of it all!
Wait, what’s that you say? The airport itself sits on reclaimed land? Oh, nevermind then…
I guess Dubai is a 3rd world country and Mexico is the new superpower.
Most are too lazy to separate & recycle what they can. Exactly what do you propose to do with the big stuff?
SOMETHING is not an answer.
We need alternative to this dumping practice
Bermuda deserves better
Call out GreenPeace and Sea Sheppard, let’s highlight the destruction to the sea by Bermuda.
Imagine what this recovery cost!! What would that crane & barge be? Guessing at least $1000 an hour plus travel time.
I am so hoping this was mechanical failure & not operator error.
Hey i just realized this is the same one that went overboard in Dockyard
Not it is not, different company / contractor. Same brand similar model machine.

I meant at the Airport. So this is second time.
There has only been one incident, incidents like this aren’t cleared in the space of a few hours. Wow…
