Three Films To Screen At Weekend Film Series

October 24, 2014

The Weekend Film Series will feature a triple bill for the first time on Sunday October 26.

The award winning documentary Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People will screen at 3 p.m., comedic drama My Old Lady starring Maggie Smith and Kevin Kline will follow at 5.15 p.m., while the fourth screening of the hilarious culinary road trip The Trip to Italy will screen at 7.30 p.m.

Through a Lens Darkly is the first documentary to explore the role of photography in shaping the identity, aspirations, and social emergence of African Americans from slavery to the present. Thoughtful and compelling, the film probes the recesses of American history by discovering powerful images that have been suppressed, forgotten, and lost.

“Through a Lens Darkly” Trailer:

The film, inspired by Deborah Willis’s book Reflections in Black, opens a window into the lives, experiences and perspectives of black families that is absent from the traditional canon. These stirring images show a much more complex and nuanced view of American culture and society and its founding ideals.

Through a Lens Darkly was named Best Diaspora Documentary at the African Movie Academy Awards in Nigeria. The film had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

My Old Lady sees down and out New Yorker Mathias [Kline] head to France to claim an apartment inherited from his late father. But when he arrives to sell the property, he is shocked to discover a live-in tenant who is not prepared to budge.

His apartment is a viager – an ancient French real estate system with complex rules pertaining to its resale – and the feisty Englishwoman Mathilde [Smith], who has lived in the apartment with her daughter Chloe [Kristin Scott Thomas] for many years, can by contract collect monthly payments from Mathias until her death.

My Old Lady trailer:

Mixing light comedy with heartfelt drama, the all-star cast sizzles in this entertaining tale of real estate woes and family secrets.

The Trip to Italy features British comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as they retrace the steps of the Romantic poets’ grand tour of Italy and indulge in some sparkling banter and impersonation-offs.

They enjoy mouthwatering meals in gorgeous settings from Liguria to Capri — the camera captures the idyllic Italian landscape and the gastronomic treasures being prepared and consumed while keeping the film centred on the crackling chemistry between the two leads.
