Restorative Justice Public Forum To Be Held
The Centre for Justice will be hosting a public forum on Restorative Justice at City Hall on Wednesday 12th November at 6:30pm.
“Restorative Justice is based on the simple idea that we are all interconnected. Based on the Bantu word Ubuntu which literally means “humanness”, Restorative Justice promotes a need for understanding but not vengeance, a need for reparation but not for retaliation, a need for humanity towards others but not for victimization,” the Centre said.
The central focus of criminal justice is on offenders getting what they deserve whereas the central focus of restorative justice is victims’ needs and offenders’ responsibilities for repairing harm. This means that victims are given a more active role within the criminal justice system as offenders are held directly accountable to their victims by bringing them together directly or indirectly through a facilitated meeting.
The panelists are Ellie Action, National Manager for Restorative Justice, UK; The Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva; Commissioner of Corrections Lt. Col. Edward J. Lamb; Nicole Stoneham; and Senior Magistrate Juan Wolffe with Rick Richardson moderating. The Forum will be held at City Hall on Wednesday 12th November 2014 between 6:30p.m and 8:30p.m. Light refreshment will be served at 5:45 p.m.
The forum will be broadcasted live on ZFB TV7. This Forum has been organized with the kind support of The Atlantic Philanthropies Fund at the Bermuda Community Foundation and the Bank of Bermuda Foundation.
