November 17, 2014

The Bermuda Regiment today [Nov 17] announced the launch of a year-long celebration to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the amalgamation of the Bermuda Militia Artillery [BMA] and Bermuda Rifles to form the Bermuda Regiment in 1965.

Governor George Fergusson, who is Commander-in-Chief of the Bermuda Regiment, addressed the crowd assembled at historic Fort Hamilton to witness the launch.

The Governor expressed his gratitude to the Regiment and its predecessors for their service to the Island, the commonwealth and the people of Bermuda, saying: “We should celebrate this history together, and do so properly. The Regiment has been one of the most genuine builders of real personal relations across the race divide and played an important part in the social rebuilding that followed desegregation.”

Senator Jeffrey Baron, Junior Minister of National Security, spoke about the Regiment’s “enduring legacy,” calling it “a critical part of Bermuda’s security infrastructure.”

“I have seen first-hand the level of service and value the Regiment brings to this island,” Senator Baron said. “It’s not just when we need to call on the Regiment as an insurance policy as we did recently for disaster recovery.

“The Regiment continually and consistently trains, educates, advances and provides life skills to Bermudians. This develops not only our young men and women, but crafts our future leaders.”

A spokesperson said, “The 50th Anniversary celebrations are incorporated under the theme of “Reunion”, with a view to bringing Bermuda together around their Regiment and attracting former foreign-service personnel back to the island.

“The historic milestone will be marked by a series of events throughout 2015 that both promote our beautiful island and celebrate the achievements of its treasured institution.”

Stephen Caton, Chair of the Bermuda Regiment 50th Anniversary Committee said; “We wish for the whole island to share in the Regiment’s spirit of unity. This year-long celebration will showcase the island’s pride in our Regiment, and thank all past and serving soldiers of the Bermuda Regiment for the selfless and vital service they provide our island home.”
