Leading Neurosurgeon To Deliver Lecture

The local medical fraternity will have the opportunity on Wednesday [Dec 10] to learn the latest on treating brain cancers in a lecture by a leading New York endovascular neurosurgeon.

Dr. Rafael Ortiz is the founding Director of Neuro-Endovascular Surgery/Interventional Neuro-Radiology and Stroke at Lenox Hill Hospital. He joined the Manhattan hospital in August 2012 and spearheaded the creation and rapid development of a comprehensive, innovative and safe program of Endovascular Neurosurgery and Interventional Neuroradiology for the first time in the history of Lenox Hill Hospital.

At 1pm on Wednesday [Dec 10] Dr. Ortiz will deliver his lecture: “Neurovascular Disease and Interventional Neuro-Oncology in the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s [KEMH] First Floor Conference Room as part of the continuing medical education programme for local physicians. On Thursday [Dec 11] morning from 8 – 9am he will conduct grand rounds with physicians at KEMH.

A member of the Board of Directors of the American Heart and Stroke Association, Dr. Ortiz has been the primary investigator of major trials of acute stroke. He has lectured extensively on brain aneurysms, carotid disease, embolization of tumors of the head and neck, sclerotherapy for facial vascular malformations, arteriovenous malformations of the brain in adult and children, and acute stroke.

His visit has been organised by Bermuda Hospitals Board and members of the public will have a chance to hear and ask him questions when he appears on the call-in radio show – Health Is Wealth on Magic 102.7FM from 5:30 – 6:30pm this Wednesday [Dec 10]. Dr. Ortiz completed his Residency in Neurology and Fellowship in Stroke/Neuro-Critical Care at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

In 2006 he moved to New York City to complete Fellowship training in Interventional Neuro-Radiology and Endovascular Surgery at the Hyman-Newman Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery at Roosevelt Hospital, where he served as attending physician and Director of the Fellowship program until June of 2012.

Among his numerous accolades, Dr. Ortiz was honored with a Proclamation by the New York State Senate in 2012 for his dedication to community education and outstanding patient care.

In 2010 he received The American Heart Association’s Young Heart Award for achievements in Cardiovascular Science and Medicine in 2010 and the American Heart Association’s Tu Corazon Latino Award for dedication to patient education and community health the same year. More recently, in 2013, he was recognized as one of the Men of the Year in the City of New York by El Diario La Prensa newspaper.

He has been featured numerous times on ABC, CBS, Telemundo, Wall Street Journal, El Diario and Daily News.
