Better get my dancing shoes on then

man I would love to fly down from Boston for tomorrow
If you grab the delta flight then you’ll get in at 11am, before the cup arrives, for all the festivities.
Yay!!! What a boost for Bermuda!!!
Dellwood Middle School Please!! just Behind from Dundonald St.
PAAAAAAAARTY BERMUDA! WELL DONE BERMUDA!!!
sounds like one hell of a party
what happens when the parting comes to an end
kind of reminds me of the Olympics when the host country is left with empty stadiums and mountains of debt
hosting a one of event for 3 weeks is nice however developing a sustainable long term industry is nicer
kind of reminds me of ancient Rome
more gladiatorial games at the Collossium to distract the masses
hope Bermudians don’t fiddle while Bermuda burns
Don’t come if you don’t support it. You can even lead a protest if it makes you feel better.
Pretty simple solution.
Fair point, but today we celebrate the fact that we do have the America’s Cup! Let’s be unified for today!
STFU
can someone say reality check
Starling , you need one.
“sounds like one hell of a party
what happens when the parting comes to an end”
You lot should have been asking these questions when the previous Govt was spending millions on Beyoncé concerts that brought in zero tourists and zero dollars.
The economic impact of this will be hundreds of millions of dollars of benefit, spread over several years, in all parts of the economy. I know you hate the thought of something so successful happening right now, but there it is.
Will you people SHUT UP with the politics. God youre annoying! Bunch of fri**in crabs in a bucket!
huh?
someone needs to research…
jsut google net gains olympics etc. you will get there. Actually no you wont you’ll just complain anyway.
Perhaps you should read Josh Sanburn’s article “Was it worth it? Debt ridden Greeks question the cost of the 2004 Olymics” Time Magazine July 09, 2012
and I quote
“For years studies have shown that holding the Olympics often has severe negative economic effects on host cities, despite the temporary burst of tourism and global attention. The competition between cities often causes governments to go financially overboard merely to win an Olympic bid. Once constructions gets under way, Governments often fail to budget properly. And after the games are over, many cities are left with infrastructure that suddenly has no real use.”
enjoy the party
Good thing the America’s Cup isn’t the olympics then, huh?
Yes if it was the Olympics we would have to build a new ocean instead of using the beautiful one we have…….massive coup for Bermuda…..it is far more than a 3 week event….people will be renting rooms and homes for months and spending lots of money.
Ummmmmm, where are you getting your information from my firend……………….The event will not even last 1 week.
Don’t forget the lead up race series the year before.
People don’t just turn up on the first day of the event, they have to prepare, train, organize.
1 week, huh? Well Oracle who won’t be competing until 2017 is slated to move to Bermuda in April. They are a 300 person strong team plus their families…
“Oracle Team USA has been moving out of their base at Pier 80 in San Francisco. They do plan to launch a test boat in San Francisco for training on the Bay in February, but have plans to move to Bermuda by April.” – See more at: http://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2014/12/02/bermuda-host-2017-americas-cup-2/#sthash.0J7d5Tr1.dpuf
I’m all for the Americas Cup, don’t get me wrong, and I want it to be a huge success for us!! I just hope we do not go overboard in terms of money spending where after the 1 week of festivities we are left further in dept.
Lets face reality here,we have people under both the PLP and the OBA whom are responsible for mis-haps of funds thorughout the last 20 years and I just hope that history doens’t repeat itself as a result.
Obviously there is nothing to compare in terms of similar event, but we know our history when it comes to money.
End of story, I will be supporting and attending the whole shindig and hope it goes off without a hitch!!!!!!!
London on the other hand….
“For London as a whole, our econometrics implies that London’s annual output growth (in Gross Value Added terms) could be boosted by 0.6 percentage points per year.
“We expect this effect to take a few years to kick in. Ultimately, we estimate that between 2015-16, London’s annual output growth could be increased by £1.8billion in today’s money – a real Olympic legacy.”
The UK economy has seen a £9.9bn boost in trade and investment from hosting the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, research suggests.
A report by the government department which promotes UK businesses put new contracts, sales and foreign investment in the last year down to the Games”
I will certianly enjoy the party. you wont. Id imagine you dot get much joy in anything save for trying to be negative and troll on a small Bermuda based website. all the best!
Um… News Flash: Bermuda didn’t win hosting the Olympics… try to focus on reality!
Sailing is a feature that all Bermudians have access to year round.
Much of the investment will be made by sponsors eager to have their logos adorn the facilities.
Was their for London Olympics. We were left a brilliant legacy. Make of it what you will. Places like Bermuda don’t often get this type of opportunity. Yours to spoil…
3 weeks??
First one to win 8 races. 3-4 races a day.
You do the math.
along with yet to be named challenger series, world series and the years some teams will spend training here spending money for accommodation and general living?
Well if you’re going to use the Collossium and gladiatorial games as your reference point, then sure. But if you look at more modern Olympic events you’ll find that the stadiums are reused as are the villages etc. Very little is left to rot. And, to take London as an example, it revitalized their tourism product as it showcased how the British had shaken off their stiff upper lip image, who can forget ‘the queen’ jumping out of the helicopter???? This is a fantastic opportunity to reintroduce Bermuda to visitors both business and pleasure. But you keep fiddling js, if you don’t want to take part, no one is going to force you.
Well said
spoiler alert
You will be pleasantly surprised that the event will be quite a bit longer than 3 weeks. Pay attention and you will see. As far as knock on effect the AC will allow for an enormous upsurge in construction and other activites and will showcase Bermuda to the precise demographic we want coming here on a Worldwide stage. Tourism and IB and Bermuda will see benefits that outlive the lead up to and actual event that will last for many years. It will be transformational indeed.
The Olympics are generally in places that already have enormous tourism numbers and are industry leaders in that category- Bermuda is not an industry leader and has a huge opportunity to improve. The cost are nowhere near the cost of the Olympics. No stadiums are needed Abd grandstands will be shipped in. I was in San fransisco after 2013′s cup- was mostly flags, banners, signage, and pop up stands present. All can be shipped in. This will get us out of our economic depression we are in- as long as we show the world that was because of our great people and genuine care for others that won us the bid pver sandiego!! Shine Bermuda shine!!!
JS I would be interested in your take on Bermuda hosting the Grand Slam tournament which we did under the PLP Government. Did you support it? Do you think we got value for money? Did you attend and support the Grand Slam every year. I seem to recall that the vast majority supported Bermuda holding the it here. I wonder if folks can put party politics aside for a while and enthusiastically support this major, major world famous event being held here. I know it’s a big ask but this is a once in a lifetime chance for all of us no matter your political persuasion.
So sad that there are people who find this negative. I mean compared to what?
PLP gave us Beyonce. She danced around for an hour or so in skimpy outfits, got a picture with he whose name cannot be mentioned, took loads of money and was gone.
OBA gives us the America’s Cup which will be visible to the world for months if not years – as many as a billion will see it, and we’ll get loads of jobs from it.
So carry on with the negative – you won’t dampen my spirit.
Be fair… PLP gave us PGA Grand Slam. Grant Gibbons and the America’s Cup Bid committee have delivered America’s Cup. And beyond that Bermuda made them both possible! Now SHUT UP with the politics you bunch of predictable, played out, broken records!!!
The Grand Slam was never meant to be anything more than yet another photo op for the Premier with Tiger Woods – only Tiger ran into problems.
PLP is predictable and played out.
Actually Mid Ocean brought the PGA Grand Slam to Bermuda – not the PLP. He who should never be named took all the credit when in reality, the PLP came in at the very end. Hence why the first few years were at Mid Ocean and then PLP moved to Port Royal to justify spending over $24million on a course. Pay attention please. There are many people that work behind the scenes to get the ball rolling and ideas planted to the organizers before government is approached or brought in. This is a HUGE coup for the sailing community who has been under-recognized for years by Tourism, failing to even address or give credit to the number of tourists/sailors that come and spend money on the sport. (BDOT never truly supported the sport financially either). Finally the sailing community is getting their due. CONGRATS!
I’m moving on from PLP OBA rhetoric Chris… You have fun with that crap.
You only want one side shut up though don’t you. Hypocrite.
Actually Jo Blo the PLP gave us a 20 million debt by revamping Port Royal to house the PGA Grand Slam when it had been successfully held at Mid Ocean for the first few years. Mine is not to reason why. Now take your own advice and stop with the politics.
Cow Polly, as I told the others… SHUT UP w your OBA/PLP crap….
You like telling people to shut up, don’t you.
Politics is really a bunch of bs. OBA supporters would ask many of the same questions about expenditures and REALISTIC expected returnsif the PLP were in power just as PLP supporters should have when their party was in power. This is a great opportunity and event for Bermuda period but we can still be excited and ask the questions that need to be asked!
Well done Mr. Dunkley and Gibbons. Thank you OBA for the uplifting news after the disastrous 14 years with the previous administration. We are on the road to recovery!
yawn! Enough of this crap… This event is for Bermuda, not OBA followers or PLP followers… I wonder what people would think reading your drivel…
He never said it wasn’t…that is in your head
Totally agree with that James. The time has now come to look to the future…Everyone!
Will jet skis be banned from the race course?
I hope so! Those yachts are faster on wind that most jet skis are on full throttle!
Yup, jetskis, ferrys, ships, tourists in little rentals, huge raftups in the middle of the course are all permitted. SNAFU.
Sounds like we have a full committee already! You all have the answers. well done!
