Costa Rican National Jailed On Money Charge
Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Jan 28], two Costa Rican nationals appeared on charges of unlawfully possessing money while knowing it to be the proceeds of crime, with one receiving an 18 month jail sentence.
27-year-old Carlos Eduardo Menendez Jiminez, plead guilty to unlawfully possessing over $142,000 while knowing it to be the proceeds of crime.
Co-accused and girlfriend Ms Denia Guterriez Rojas, 29, pleaded not guilty to the charge, and the Crown said it would offer no evidence against Ms Rojas.
The possession was found out at LF Wade international airport in December 2014 as the pair sought to pass through US Customs, on their way to Panama via Miami.
US Customs decided on a secondary search and asked Bermuda Customs for assistance. On examination, sealed plastic bags containing over $142,000 which was mostly in large denomination dollar currency, were found in the personal baggage that the pair claimed to own.
Magistrate Tokunbo sentenced Mr Jiminez to 18 months in jail, and all the money was ordered to be forfeited to the Crown.

Yes – deposit right into the coffers of Government….
and send them back to Costa Rica
That is a “given”!!
At least this goes to government to help, it’s one hundred and fourty two thousand bobby not one hundred and forty two. Who really get’s this money anyway? How is it portioned out, can someone explain?
governments doing what they do best…taking the property of others…
they claim to be so concerned on saving money…yet who will now have to pay for this mans incarceration to the tune of 80,000 per year? The more suitable situation would be to distribute the money to charities (don’t kid yourself – they’d take it) and send him on with out he cash. He would no doubt be “rehabilitated” upon his arrival sans cash…
So are you saying – in a round-a-bout way that we should not send anyone to prison… Because it cost the BDA Tax Payer $80,000 P.A???
Ask the Gov’t – the police – the judiciary and lastly the BDA public if they are comfortable with that thinking!!
Who’s “fault” is it – because it makes the Island such an expensive place… To do just about anything??
The proverbial “cart-before-the-horse” perhaps!!
This guy knew exactly what he was doing – so if you do the “crime” and get caught, because you were stupid – then expect to do the time as well!!
I wonder if they have a BDA connection in Costa Rica – as there are quite a few “onions” retired in that neck-of-the-woods!! I know a few personally!!
