Major Traffic Delays: Traffic Heading From West
[Updated] The motoring public is advised to expect delays in the Harbour Road, Paget area near the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club, due to roadworks, the police said this morning [March 2].
“Morning commuters are advised to obey the temporary traffic lights in the area and consider taking alternate routes if possible,” a police spokesperson said.
“The patience and cooperation of motorists traveling along this section of Harbour Road is appreciated.”
Update 8.34am: Another statement from the police said, “There are major traffic delays for traffic coming from the western end of the island as a result of a private company’s traffic lights on Harbour Road near Red Hole.
“Police are on their way to direct traffic and the situation should be rectified soon.”
Why are they allowed to put up a traffic light before rush hour is over
Road works by who? Why aren’t these things down at night, over the weekend or after 9AM in areas that will greatly impact the flow of traffic?
Cause it’s called overtime. And we know the story on that.
In the event these jobs were to be done by them that do work during the daylight hours then yes it would require them to be paid overtime. Now whether its time and a half or straight pay it’s going to cost.
Now this is an opportunity for them who are out of work to step up and state they’re willing to do certain jobs, such as this here roadwork to prevent the delays / interruption with the traffic flowing smoothly…
Because that would make too much sense. It’s clearly better to unexpectedly block one of the main routes into town during Monday morning rush hour.
I breezed through east broadway just.
This “Road Work” was not advertised.. they need to be fined and taken down…
Possibly its private property that’s being fixed that could cause a major traffic accident if the lights are not up and can not be fixed in a day.
The road works are due to a main water value bursting. The men have been working since before 5am.
My kids spent 1-1/2 hours in the car on the way to school this morning because somebody thought it was a good idea to set up a stoplight on Harbour Road early on a Monday morning!
When W&E were repairing hurricane damage on Harbour Road at Salt Kettle for several months, they opened the road to one-way morning and evening traffic, and closed the road during non-peak hours for works. This made so much sense.
I hope this private company are forced to do the same!
Looks like it was an emergency situation, as Iknow mentions above. Not much you can do in that circumstance except set up the appropriate road lights, good on Police for responding quickly to assist.
That’s the issue. The Police didn’t respond quickly. I was in that tailback for an hour and was well past it before there was any mention of the Police responding. In these situations, why aren’t those blocking the traffic with road works required to notify the Police so that they can be proactive and do their best to minimize congestion before it happens? They could have made Harbour Rd one way into town for the rush hour and saved many folks wasting an hour inching along.
One way traffic in the morning is a Good idea!
Why did they not schedule police to direct traffic from the beginning?? Bad pre planning as usual, everyone knows that traffic gets backed up when there is lights during rush hour traffic.
I’m sure they’ll remember that the next time they schedule a major pipe burst
Watlington Water Works have beern dealing with burst water pipes along there for years. Replace the whole line. IT IS OLD!
Only in Bermuda drivers have to be told to obey traffic lights. SMH. Are we that disrespectful of traffic laws?
You know how it goes here. Traffic lights, among other signage, are merely suggestions…
Amusing how everyone dives in without knowing the story. I guess we should be arresting the pipe for having the nerve to burst just before rush hour. Bet it was a BIU pipe.
On the subject of red lights, I thought it was coming practice here, at least for bikes, that red lights should only be obeyed if there is someone coming the other way (and not always then). So many times they just drive straight through I assumed it was legal.
Nobody needs to know the “story” of what happened. Using a little bit of common sense in this situation is all that is required. You say a pipe burst…fine. Have this private company coordinate with the Police to block all west bound traffic going on Harbour Road from Stowe Hill to Manse Road and have Harbour Road ONE WAY, ONE LANE traffic into Hamilton from 7am to 10am. Problem solved.
Why should the police be involved? They aren’t there to direct traffic.
Here we go again , the ‘bikes are the root of all our road evils’ mentality .
A few months ago a roadworks traffic control light changed to red as I approached (on my bike) and I stopped , ‘first in line’
I was then promptly passed by 7 cars and a truck who all ran the light. Two of the car drivers looked at me as if I was from another planet and the truck almost rear ended the last car in the line as they all unexpectedly bottle necked in the single lane.
Are private companies permitted to erect and use traffic lights and if so, who is responsible for the oversight of their use?
Whats the big deal? There were lights. There was a broken water main. Heading west was slightly longer this evening. Put on some music. Have an actual conversation with someone. Deal with it. If you want the fast paced city life you are in the wrong place. Don’t get all pissy about how it takes an extra 15 minuets to get home. God forbid you miss your favorite tv show whatever other mind numbing activity you had planned. Roll with the punches.
Good thing Ambulance wasn’t needed in warwick cause they would have bwwn stuck on Middle Rd which waa grid locked as well.
