Man Admits Stealing Fish & Dishwashing Liquid
Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Apr 7], a 54-year-old man admitted stealing dishwashing liquid and fish from Marketplace.
Gary Gibbons pleaded guilty to stealing Dawn dishwashing liquid and fish from the Shelly Bay Marketplace store in June 2014; and was granted a Conditional Discharge.
The Crown Prosecutor told Senior Magistrate Juan Wolffe that shop staff had seen Mr Gibbons on CCTV as, dressed in a heavy top coat, he wandered about the store.
He was seen to purchase and pay for some items but on being accosted outside the store, he had the detergent and fish under his coat but had not paid for them.
Police were called and Mr Gibbons admitted the theft.
Questioned by the Senior Magistrate, Mr Gibbons admitted that he sometimes used heroin but Mr Gibbons told the Magistrate that he was not addicted to it.
The Senior Magistrate took into account that Mr Gibbons had not appeared in Court on any similar matter since 2008 and granted him a twelve month Conditional Discharge.
The Senior Magistrate attached the following conditions: that Mr Gibbons attend sessions of the Drug Treatment Court, that for the next twelve months he submit to random drug testing; that he abstain from the use of alcohol and illicit drugs.
The Senior Magistrate warned Mr Gibbons that if he breached any of these conditions, he could be brought back before the Court and be dealt with differently.
